Definition:

Sum of full-time employment income received by persons 15 years of age
and over divided by the total employed population aged 15 and over in a
given year.

!    Employment income refers to total income received by persons 15
     years of age and over as wages and salaries, net income from
     unincorporated non-farm business and/or professional practice and
     net farm self-employment income.

Interpretation:

!    Research has repeatedly shown a strong positive relationship
     between income and health.

!    Employment is important for individuals and populations.
     Employment provides people, not only with income, but with
     identity, self-esteem and social contact.

!    High employment incomes reduce the need for government
     assistance.


Limitations:

!    The reporting of income is subject to underreporting bias.

!    Certain sub-groups are less well counted than others, e.g., young
     adults.

!    Averaging does not reveal the range of employment income in the
     population.
