2006 Frederick W. Mielke, Jr. Award Presented on November 14th
PG&E Employee/Volunteer honored for 18 years of Leadership
with Hospice of San Joaquin’s Tree of Lights
On Saturday, November 18th Stocktonians traveling past Delta College on Pacific Avenue will see a
PG&E crew performing a once-a-year service: stringing holiday lights on the huge evergreen that sits
at the entry at Yokuts and Pacific. The volunteer crew is led by Mark Rasmussen who initiated the
technical planning and production of the first Tree of Lights 18 years ago. Mark remains the lead
person for this project and over the past 18 years Mark has established additional sites for the
Hospice of San Joaquin annual event. Through his dedication and his ability to attract other PG&E
employees to assist in stringing thousands of outdoor lights, Mark has helped to raise over $1 million
dollars (since 1988) for Hospice of San Joaquin’s mission to serve the terminally ill and their families.

For his dedication, PG&E has selected Mark Rasmussen to receive its Mielke Award for outstanding
community service. The Mielke Award is given to only five (5) PG&E employees each year. The
winners are chosen form all their employees in California. The Honor is named for Frederick Mielke,
Jr., who served as PG&E’s Chairman from 1979 – 1986 and was known for his efforts to encourage
employees to serve their communities beyond the work-day.

The 2006 Mielke Awards were presented Tuesday, November 14th at PG&E San Francisco
headquarters, with Ophelia Basgal, VP of Civic Partnership and Community Initiatives, as the MC.
Hospice of San Joaquin’s Executive Director, Barbara Tognoli provided the nomination presentation
to the Mielke Awards committee at the invitation of Ken Wells, PG&E Regional Manager. Mrs.
Tognoli, Gail Wigley, RN, Clinical Director and Barbara Pombo, Director of Development, and Frank
Carilllo, Tree of Lights Volunteer attended the awards ceremony.

Barbara Tognoli, with an invitation to the community, commented: “We are so pleased to congratulate
Mark on his extraordinary service to hospice care, to our communities. With his leadership we are
today able to bring this holiday tradition to the families we serve throughout the region in six locations.
With the support of our PG&E crew, every family touched by the loss of a loved one can easily
participate in lighting up a light in their local communities.”
