JOB DESCRIPTION: SUPPORT WORKER

Responsible to:       the Home Manager, or in their absence, the Deputy or Senior.


Responsible for:      providing a high standard of care and support for the
                      service users of the Home, making the best use of facilities and
                      situations to maximise development and potential.

Main Objectives:      It is hoped that service users will participate to varying
                      degrees in all domestic tasks, including shopping, cooking,
                      cleaning, etc. The Support Worker will be required to
                      carry out these tasks with the service users in order to enable
                      the development of appropriate skills.

1.     To support the service users with all aspects of personal care as appropriate.

2.     To assist in arranging trips, outings and holidays and accompanying the
       service users, when required.

3.     General domestic duties including the preparation of meals, cleaning and
       laundry

4.     Administration of medication and the maintenance of records of all drugs
       and treatment given in accordance with LOT policy.

5.     To enable the service users to purchase clothes and other personal items.

6.     To participate in all staff meetings as required and take part in discussion and
       decision-making. To carry out policies agreed by the staff group, Home
       Manager or organisation.

7.      To observe financial instructions and keep expenditure within budgetary
limits.

8.     To generally participate in the daily lives of the service users. This may
       include sharing meals, leisure activities and encouraging the service users to
       participate as far as possible in the running of the Home.
9.     To accompany the service users and support them in their places of worship.

10.    To liaise with the appropriate outside agencies to ensure continuity of care.

11.    To ensure that accurate records are kept and that confidentiality is maintained
       at all times.

12.    To take on the role of keyworker.

13.    To carry out other appropriate duties not specified above, at the request of the
       Home Manager.

14.    To undertake any training required according to the needs of the service users,
       home and organisation.

The Support Worker will be required to work a 37-hour week, which will consist of
duty shifts as per rota. This may also include night duty and sleep-in duties. It may be
necessary, from time to time, to work a split duty shift or additional hours in order to
cover for staff who are absent at short notice. Such extra hours may be taken as time
off in lieu at a time convenient to the Home.

It may be necessary for the post-holder to take part of their annual leave when service
users are away.

These responsibilities must be carried out with due regard to LOT’s Equal
