									                                JOB DESCRIPTION


TITLE OF POST:                Apprentice Carpenter

POST NO:                      PS6/71

DEPARTMENT:                   Property Services

RESPONSIBLE TO:               General Maintenance Supervisor

RESPONSIBLE FOR:              Nil Staff

MAIN CONTACTS:                (1)   Tenants/residents
                              (2)   General Maintenance Supervisors
                              (3)   Other tradesmen
                              (4)   Sub-contractors

OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To be responsible for carrying out appropriate general repair, maintenance and
improvement to the Association’s properties in an effective and efficient manner and
in accordance with good building practice under the guidance and supervision of
qualified Craftsmen.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

1. To undertake repairs as directed in an efficient manner, specially all forms of
   carpentry work in a maintenance jobbing situation.

2. Where necessary, to identify the extent and scope of the reported defects and after
   consultation take the appropriate remedial action in accordance with best practice
   and be conscious of value for money solutions.

3. In more complex cases refer the matter to a senior member of staff to identify the
   necessary remedial actions.

4. To identify all necessary materials and equipment required to effect repairs
   identified in accordance with the best practice and Health and Safety at work
   regulations. Employees must wear protective clothing where required and safety
   footwear at all times.

5. To liaise with residents and other staff, as appropriate, to ensure staff and residents
   are aware of progress and action taken or required to rectify the identified defects.

6. To ensure safe and efficient utilisation of all machinery used in connection with
   jobbing carpentry repairs, following safe working practices at all times.

7. To assist all other trades as and when required to ensure that the residents receive
   the best possible quality service.

8. To ensure that all plant and tools are maintained and in clean order.


NOTE:       No job description can cover every issue which may arise within the post
            at various times, and the jobholder is expected to carry out other duties
            time to time that are broadly consistent with those in this document.

                     PERSON SPECIFICATION



1.   QUALIFICATIONS

     General level of Education including GCSE/GVNQ’s
     Will need to attain City and Guilds or recognised equivalent trade
     Qualification to NVQ level 3.

2.   WORK EXPERIENCE

     Ability to identify building defects and recommend remedial action.
     Ability to carry out appropriate repairs.


3.   PERSONAL QUALITIES/SKILLS

     Ability to work under time and other pressures
     Ability to communicate effectively with tenants/general public

4.   SPECIAL CONDITIONS

     Understanding of Health and Safety legislation as appropriate to the tasks.
     Valid Driving Licence
     To be attained during Apprenticeship
