PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNICATIONS INTERN
JOB DESCRIPTION
The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) seeks a graduate-level Public Health
Communications intern to handle Web site content development and maintenance, and special
communication projects.
NYSHealth Background:
NYSHealth is a private foundation dedicated to improving the health of all New Yorkers.
NYSHealth has a threefold mission:
• expanding health insurance coverage to State residents who cannot afford to purchase
their own coverage or whose coverage is inadequate;
• increasing access to high-quality health are services for underserved people; and
• improving public and community health by educating New Yorkers about health issues
and empowering communities to address them.
Position Summary:
The Public Health Communications Intern will work closely with the Communications Officer
and the Foundation’s external public relations firm. S/he will take the lead on projects related
to the Foundation’s Web site and communication mediums, and act as day-to-day liaison for
management of Web site. The internship is a part-time position with flexible hours.
Compensation is $10 to $12 per hour.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities are as follows:
• Manage all aspects of the NYSHealth Web site:
o Draft and post content as directed
o Conduct research and draf descriptions for events, news items, and resources
o Monitor daily news items to be posted on the Web site
o Perform day-to-day fixes as requested
o Monitor Web site daily for problems/inconsistencies
• Draft content for online newsletter
• Provide general communications support to NYSHealth staff
Qualifications:
NYSHealth seeks a graduate-level student pursuing a degree in journalism, health policy,
public health or related field. Potential candidate must have a strong commitment to
NYSHealth’s mission and should possess excellent writing, analytical, research, and
communication skills. Additionally, the candidate must have the ability to multi-task and to
work both cooperatively and autonomously. Experience in public health, health policy,
