Guidance notes for application to the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences VU Amsterdam
Application form Please state the name of the master’s programme and, if possible, the name of the specialisation, for instance, MSc Biomedical Sciences, specialisation International Public Health. You can check the faculty website for the exact name of your programme (www.falw.vu.nl/masters). The sections Admission & Enrolment and Practical information provide information about procedures, tuition fees, scholarships etc. and will be updated regularly. If you need to fill in a date, please state day (if possible), month and year. Documentation in support of your application It is possible that you have not yet obtained your degree on the basis of which you apply for admission to a master’s programme. In this case you can send a certified photocopy of the certificate or diploma with a transcript of your records to the address mentioned on the form as soon as possible after you have been awarded the qualification. This also applies to the English proficiency test. TOEFL results will be sent by the TOEFL examination board itself. Certified copies of your diploma/degree and transcript of records as well as proof of English proficiency must be available when you enrol at the VU at the beginning of the academic year, 16 August 2005. The required documents for your application have to be in Dutch, English, German, French or Spanish, or translated into one of these languages by a sworn translator. Please note that this should be the translation stamped and signed by the translator (not a photocopy of the stamped and signed translation!), and accompanied by a certified photocopy of the document in the native language. A certified photocopy is a photocopy with the statement of an authorised person that it is a copy of the original document. This can be a solicitor, your university, etc.

Application procedure The deadline for application was officially 1 March 2008. Applications after this date are still accepted, but it should be recognised that the faculty cannot guarantee that the requisite procedures will be finished before the start of the new academic year. Especially for students from countries outside Europe the procedure of admission to the master’s programmes as well as that of obtaining an MVV (entrance visa) will take a very long time. The staff will, of course, do their best to process your application as quickly as possible. When your documents have arrived at the faculty, the master co-ordinator will check if the application is complete and submit this to the Examination Board. You will be informed about the decision of the Examination Board by letter as soon as possible. If you are admitted, you will receive information, usually by e-mail, on how to apply for accommodation, for an MVV (entrance visa), if applicable, and on the VU enrolment procedure. 5

If you have questions about your admission procedure or the content of the programme of study, you can contact the master co-ordinator. E-mail addresses are available on the website (www.falw.vu.nl/masters).
