Simulation Data and Process Management: Why PLM Integration is Critical Mr. Eric Riedy Product Manager, Team Center for Simulation Siemens UGS PLM Software Abstract Failure to meet customer needs and being late to market are two of the most common reasons why product launches fail according to a recent study by AMR. In an effort to avoid these problems, companies are increasingly turning to advanced simulation methods to investigate design alternatives early in the development cycle and save time and money that would otherwise be spent on costly physical prototyping and testing. While many companies have seen success in the application of specific simulation techniques, these efforts have often been within downstream “islands of CAE” and have generally not delivered the business impact that was anticipated due to being “on the outside looking in”. Often, expert analysts solve tough design problems or propose new design changes only to realize that their analysis was based on an out-of-date design description or that the recommendations were in conflict with other design or manufacturing requirements. In the time required to re-build and re-analyze the models with the correct design data and constraints, the opportunity to influence the design is either lost entirely or minimized. Simulation processes and “best practices” knowledge also need to be captured and re- used from one product program to the next. At Siemens PLM Software, we contend that to be most effective, simulation activities must be fully integrated within the enterprise product development process and the PLM environment. We will review how Teamcenter for Simulation provides that single, organized and secure source of simulation-specific data and processes and will demonstrate the value of adopting a PLM-based simulation data and process management solution that has integrated capabilities for archiving and re-use of relevant CAE and test information; CAE BOM synchronization with the master product BOM; requirements, configuration and change management; and visual collaboration throughout the extended enterprise.
