To manage the NIMR Flow Cytometry facility.

Reports Dr Anne O’Garra to: _________________________________________________________ Main Responsibilities


To maintain the facility’s 8 flow cytometers (3 MoFlo cell sorters, 2 FACSCaliburs and one FACScan, LSR and CyAn), ensuring correct alignment and filter settings to maximize performance of the instruments and the time available for users. Coordinate with service engineers to fix flow cytometers when required and set up regular maintenance visits. To be responsible for the provision of consumables for the facility (including computer hardware and software) within a defined budget. To set up and maintain a system for pre-booking and recording use of the sorters and analysers. To set up and run sorting experiments on the MoFlo sorters for Users from the Research Divisions. To supervise and train as required, personnel using the Flow Cytometry Facility. To train Users in the use of flow cytometry analyzers. To assist facility Users with experimental design, instrument set up, and data analysis including figure preparation for publication. To ensure adequate backup of data from the cell sorters. To be responsible for health and safety in the Flow Cytometry facility, including performing COSHH assessments. To stay up-to-date with technical developments in the field through reading the literature, attending courses or conferences. To advise the Users of how the facility should develop in terms of upgrades of existing instruments, purchase of new instruments, and introduction of new techniques.











 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Applicants should hold a BSc or PhD in a biology-related discipline. Applicants should have a minimum of 3 years experience in a cytometry laboratory including the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of highspeed cell sorters and analysers. Experience of working with both Becton Dickinson and DakoCytomation instruments and software is desirable. Staff Performance A formal staff performance and development appraisal is carried out annually.
