The problems listed below will not be collected or graded; it is your responsibility to do them
on your own in a timely manner. The extra problems are (or will be) linked from the web
version of this assignment sheet; they may or may not be handed out it class, depending on
the budget situation.

Information about the Zumdahl textbook
Text Features
The periodic table appears in the inside front cover. Appendices (purpleish-tipped pages)
include Mathematical Procedures, Thermodynamic Data, Equilibrium Constant Values,
Electrochemical Reduction Potentials and Conversion Factors. There is also a Glossary (green-
tipped pages) with definitions and references to sections in the book and Answers to Selected
Exercises (odd-numbered problems, except for Active Learning Questions and Marathon
Problems).

Text Accessories
The Student Web Site (college.hmco.com/pic/zumdahl7e; passkey required) includes self-
quizzes, flashcards and useful links. The Student Solutions Manual and Study Guide are
available for purchase. The Solutions Manual contains complete solutions to the problems.

Problems and Questions
Sample Exercises appear within each chapter. These problems relate to a topic that was just
discussed and include a completely explained solution to the problem. They also refer you to
similar problems at the end of the chapter. It is highly recommended that you work these
problems as you go through the chapter. The problems at the end of each chapter are grouped
into several categories—Active Learning Questions (even though these appear first, you
shouldn’t necessarily do them first), Questions (qualitative questions, not grouped by topic),
Exercises (grouped by chapter topic; similar exercises are paired), Additional Exercises (not
grouped by topic), Challenge Problems (not grouped by topic and, well, more challenging) and
Marathon Problems (usually involve pulling together several concepts from the current and
previous chapters).
