“Canned” Book Report
Please choose and read a chapter book of your choice which you have not
previously read. Here are the instructions for a “canned” book
report that is due on Wednesday, September 26.
One large coffee or shortening can
Construction paper or drawing paper
Colored pencils, markers, or crayons and glue or tape
A collection of items (maximum of 5) to put inside the can:
one item for each of the main characters and other items to help tell
1. Cut paper to fit around the can.
2. Write the book title and author on the paper along with a colorful
3. Write your name on the paper.
4. Glue or tape the paper around the can.
5. Put objects into the can that will be good visual aids to help you give an
oral book report.
As you tell the class about your book, you will show them the items from
If my book report was on Charlotte’s Web, I might have a banana peel in
a zipper bag in my can. Then when I told about Wilbur loving his slops, I would
show the class the banana peel. It’s really more interesting to have something
creative represent your characters and plot. The banana peel is more creative
than a little plastic pig from a farm animal set. Have fun being creative!
Plan and practice what you will say. Your report should last two to three
minutes, and no longer!
Here is how the report will be evaluated for a grade.
Book title and author 20 points
Illustration 25 points
Name (Yours, for identification) 5 points
Creativity and choice of objects 25 points
Oral presentation 25 points
