									Assignment Five: Timed Essay Writing

Learning Objective: Writing under pressure can be challenging inasmuch as it requires you to adapt the rhetorical strategies you have developed during this semester to situations that don’t allow the luxury of ongoing rethinking and revision. To write effectively under time constraints, you will have to become familiar with additional writing strategies. In addition to academic essays, you will be able to use the strategies discussed in this unit to respond to other life situations that require the quick composition of a polished document, such as news articles, sales presentations, public information briefings and business memos. You will read more about Essay Exams in Allyn & Bacon, Chapter 16.

Assignment: This sequence of writing assignments and classroom activities will allow you to write several timed essays on assigned topics. Moreover, we have designed this sequence, so that by the end of it, you will be able to comprehend essay questions in all their parts (particularly the underlying assumptions), search your memory bank for details and other material, conceive and organize a response that fits the requirements of the assignment within the given time span, edit the work to remove grammatical surface errors, and produce a polished document tailored to the primary audience—in this case, your instructor. Evaluation Criteria: You will be graded on your overall writing process. Generally, when writing a timed or impromptu writing assignment, you should follow the basic essay structure (thesis, topic sentence, supporting evidence, conclusion, etc.). The impromptu essay topic will be given to you when you sit to take the final exam that is scheduled for exams week. Your essay will be well formulated and written within the 55-minute time allotment, and will serve as your final exam for this course. When you complete your in-class timed essay, I will collect your essay in mini-portfolio format. On the day of the final exam, you must include your invention, drafts, peer reviews and revisions of the timed essays previously done in class. The final exam will be handed in a simple pocket folder with your name on it. In your final assignment, I am looking for: A clear, concise, logical essay that is supported by specific details with a clear thesis and a correlating thesis-driven structure Vivid, engaging language A purpose-driven story that excludes unrelated tangents Signs of rhetorical sensitivity; audience and assignment-appropriate writing Few grammatical or mechanical errors; MLA style Demonstrate a clear and logically organized train of thought Use of detail and examples to inform Essay addresses all the pertinent issues Few grammatical or mechanical errors; MLA style A portfolio of work that demonstrates an effective writing process How well you write under pressure
