BRIEF WRITE UP FOR ISO
Mr. Alan Bryden, Secretary General, ISO visited BIS during 4-7 December 2007. During
his visit, he addressed the international trainees from developing countries on
standardization at National Institute for Training in Standardization (NITS), Noida. This
was the first time that an ISO Secretary General visited NITS during the ongoing ITP
programme and distributed the certificate to the participants on the successful completion
on their training in the field of standardization and conformity assessment.
During his stay in Delhi, he held discussions with Mr. Sharad Pawar, Hon’ble minister
for Consumer Affairs, Mr. Rajeev Shah, Member Secretary, Planning Commission, Mr.
Y.S.Bhave, Secretary, Ministry of Consumer affairs. He also had discussions with CII,
FICCI, BIS officers, and other industry representatives at Delhi while with IT sector at
Bangalore. He also addressed the press meet.
During the meetings it was agreed that as an emerging economy India should increase its
participation in international standardization activity by way of attending and hosting ISO
TC/SC meetings. Being a member of ISO Council can take part in decision making. Even
at regional level India should take lead. It is proposed that India may host ISO General
Assembly meeting in 2010/2011 and COPOLCO meeting in India during 2009. India to
also take proactive part in newer areas of standardization like bio-fuels, renewable energy
