RESOLUTION REQUIREMENT: 200 DPI AT FINAL FINISHED SIZE. Since we are a newsprint title, we print at a lower line screen than normal and therefore 200 dpi at final finished size is the press requirement. Files that are under this resolution will not print with optimal quality, and files that are over this resolution will not only have an excessive file size but will have degraded output quality. PRESS REQUIREMENT:

If you are apprehensive or inexperienced with FTP transmissions, it may be best to submit your files on CD-ROM or DVD. All files submitted via FTP do require a proof. It is CRUCIAL to let your sales rep know when the file has been uploaded to the FTP.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION: Here are some tips and tricks to avoid some of the common problems we see. Remember, printing to newsprint has very special characteristics. *the machines that trim newsprint magazines can vary greatly so it is CruCiAL to keep all important information inSiDE the Live Area. ESM is NOT responsible for anything placed outside Live Area dimensions!
• A good four color black definition to use is 50% cyan, 50% magenta, 50% yellow, and 100% black. This four color black value should be applied to any type, rules, or logos that overlap on a colored photo or background. Using 100% black over a color will cause the black to appear translucent. Using a different four color black value will often cause the black to appear a muddy brown or green color. • Build files off of the templates we provide. • Pay very close attention to our bleed requirement for the full and double page bleed ads, which is 1/2” (0.5) inches on all four sides. Not incorporating this bleed may change the overall size of your document. This is particularly important when building files where the entire layout is done in Photoshop and the file is submitted to us as a .TIF or .PSD. • Pay very close attention to our safety requirement (margin) of 1/4” (.25) inches on full and double page ads. Due to variances among machines that trim newsprint, anything that is outside this area has a risk of getting cut off. • Full color images that are saved and sent in RGB mode may look good on your screen, but will not print correctly. In fact, they will print in black and white. For best results, use the color settings we provide and ensure that all color elements are CMYK. • Any percentage of black that is above 85% will most likely darken on the press and appear as solid black. This is an important consideration when preparing your design. Make the shade of gray about 15% lighter than you normally would to compensate. • A solid black background with red type is the worst possible combination of colors for printing on newsprint. We cannot be held responsible for any trapping or registration issues that may occur. • In the event that your ad does not fill the entire space available and has any white borders, please send the ad with crop marks. We have no way of knowing the positioning, and without crop marks, the ad will simply be floated to fill the space. • Grayscale ads should be sent in grayscale mode, and not RGB or CMYK.
