How To Value your Australian Gold Coins

Building a coin collection, particularly out of gold coins, presents many advantages for the collection owner. Precious metal coins, such as gold coins, act as a hedge against inflation, and also preserve wealth during recessed and depressed economies.

What is Australian Kangaroo Gold?

Perhaps the most popular gold coin on the market is the Australian Lunar Gold Coin, and gold nugget, issued by the Perth Mint in Australia. Sometimes referred to as Australian Kangaroo gold, the Australian Gold Nugget is minted in a variety of valuations, and always cast in 24 carat (pure) gold. Each year, the Perth Mint creates a new design for each of the coins, thus increasing their collectable value, or numismatic value, over time. The Gold Nugget was first minted in 1986 by the Gold Corporation, owned by the government of Western Australia. Up until 1989, the reverse of these gold coins pictured different Australian gold nuggets. With the 1989 edition, the design was altered to feature kangaroos, {the globally recognized symbol of Australia. In 1991, two ounce, ten ounce, and 1 kilo sizes were first produced. These were produced with the intention of keeping premiums low using economies of scale, and are some of the largest gold bullion coins ever manufactured. In 1992, the face values of these large bullion coins were lowered to keep them in proportion to the 1 ounce bullion coin. The reverse of the coins does not vary every 12 months like the lower denominations; the same red kangaroo design is utilized every year.

What is the Australian Lunar Gold Coin

The Gold Nugget bullion coin should not be mistaken for Lunar series gold coins, which are also introduced by the Perth Mint. Like the Nuggets, Australian Lunar gold coins have a different design each twelve months. These are based on the Chinese lunar calendar and feature the symbol for that year, for example a tiger for the Chinese Year Of The Tiger. These animals are shown along with one of the five elements of earth, fire, water, wood and metal. Each element animal combination only occurs every sixty years thereby enhaciing their worth in collector's eyes.

The Lunar series coins are released in the same denominations as the Gold Nuggets, and the same weights. They are also manufactured from 99.99% pure gold.
