I Search Report
Over the next few weeks you will complete a very important English
assignment for the sixth grade. This assignment is titled an I-search report.
An I-search report is a personal exploration of a topic that especially
interests you. This report will include:
. A topic you want to know more about
. The story of why you are interested in this topic
. The use of the pronoun I to tell your story
. A report of what you learned
The I-search paper will be broken down into parts. Remember, it is a
research paper with a personal focus. It reports on what is learned and how
it is learned.
Part 1: Choosing a topic
The topic of the I-search paper should be something you need or want to
know more about for a reason of your own. Select two topics for research,
including a brief statement of your need to research each topic. Topic
choice is due _____________.
Complete an in class topic/question page. (This paper will become your
introductory paragraph of your actual paper.)
Part 2: Research
1. During your research it is important to keep track of your source
material. Write the title of the book or magazine. Also include the
title of the article, date, and pages used. If using the internet please
cite the complete web site that was used. Please look at the attached
bibliography page to see the exact way to cite a source. There is a
three source minimum and they may not all be from the internet.
Your sources will be looked at on ____________________. Please
have your sources at school to show me.
2. Keep a journal of the process you used to research your topic. This is
a major part of your paper. See attached form to help you set up your
journal. The first set of journal entries are due
_____________________________. The second set of journal entries
are due_____________________________. The first set will include
the process of finding your sources and the second set will include the
actual process you went through when you began researching your
questions about your topic. You must have a journal entry for every
time you do anything related to this paper.
3. You must use note cards. You will write one of the big questions on
top of the note cards. On the note card you will write down all the
information that answers the question on top of the note card. Only
put details that support your main question. Make sure you have
enough details (remember you are writing a research report). The first
set of five note cards are due ______________________. The other
set of five note cards are due
_________________________________.If you need to compete more
note cards to answer your questions then feel free. Don’t forget you
should have journal entries for each of your note cards.
Part 3: Writing the paper
1. Draft the introduction. Explain why it was important to you to learn
more about your topic. You should use the paper you wrote in the
“choosing a topic” portion of the assignment. Indicate what you knew
about the topic before you started, and what you imagined to be true at
the time. In the second paragraph of the introduction please write
down the five or six big questions that you hope to have answered in
2. Write the story of your search as a personal narrative. Use the journal
you wrote as you did your research. Enable your readers to
experience the process you went through. Discuss the steps that were
essential to your understanding the topic. This is the main body of
your paper. Not only do you report on your findings to your big
questions, but you also add your personal experience you’ve had
along the way. If you interviewed someone about your topic then you
put that interview in this part of the paper.
Here is an example of how to put research with journal entries.
Following my interview with my mom I turned to the internet for continuing
my research. I spent four days looking for information. Most of the links
that were suggested didn’t help me; however, when I did find relevant
information it was not only from good sources such as hospitals, doctors,
and various associations, but it also contained helpful information for my
topic. My first question was………….one source I found answered it in this
3. Conclusion. Here is where you reflect upon the entire search
experience, not only what you got out of it, not only what you’ve
learned, but how this search has changed your life. It is one or two
paragraphs in length and summarizes your entire search experience.
