Description of specialist areas of practice Terrorism, Money Laundering, Commercial Fraud, Serious Crime, Professional Discipline, Extradition, Actions Against the Police. John has been a Leading Junior in serious criminal work for over 18 years acting as Leading Counsel in cases of Terrorism, Murder and other serious offences of violence, Money Laundering, Serious Fraud, (including MTIC and other VAT fraud, Inland Revenue Fraud, Company Fraud, Mortgage and Banking fraud), Rape and other Serious Sexual Offences, Robbery and Serious Drugs cases. John has conducted a large number of Disciplinary cases, including cases that have been conducted in the Administration Court, the General Medical Council, the Professional Conduct Committee of the General Chiropractic Council, the Law Society and the Statutory Committee of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He has also undertaken considerable advisory work relating to Chiropractic cases including advising on the appropriate content of patient consent forms. John has lectured to Solicitors and Barristers on Human rights, The Criminal Justice Act 2003 and the Terrorism Acts 2000 and 2006. He has also given a paper on Terrorism and Free Speech at an all day conference held by Index on Censorship and has had an article on the Terrorism Act 2006 published in their journal. He addressed Parliaments' Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) in November 2008 on the effect of the Terrorism Act 2006. John is currently instructed in a number of cases including a case involving allegations of terrorism and a case involving an MTIC fraud alleged to involve a loss to the UK Customs and Revenue in excess of £175 million.

Criminal cases R V IH, 2009, Luton Crown Court, Leading Counsel in an eight week trial where it was alleged that the Defendant was involved in a multi million pound mortgage fraud. The Defendant was acquitted of all charges. R V WH, 2009, Chichester Crown Court, Counsel in a case where the Defendant was charged with wounding with intent and wounding. The Defendant was acquitted of all charges. R V RJ, 2009, Harrow Crown Court, Counsel in a case involving allegations of historical rape made by the Defendants nieces. The Defendant was acquitted of a number of rape charges and others that the jury could not decide upon were sent for retrial.

R v YF, 2009, Isleworth Crown Court, Counsel in a money laundering case where it was alleged that YF was involved in taking £2 million out of the country. R V NA, 2008-2009, Woolwich Crown Court, Leading Counsel in a three month trial where it was alleged that Ms. NA was involved in a conspiracy to supply firearms, live ammunition and silencers. Ms. NA was acquitted. R V Mizanur Rahman, 2008, CA, Counsel for the Appellant, successfully persuading the Court of Appeal to reduce a sentence of 6 years to 4 years for the offence of solicitation to murder. R V NP, 2008, Kingston Crown Court, Counsel in a case representing a defendant charged with sexually assaulting his daughter. The Defence of “sexsomnia” was raised, namely, that the Act was committed during a sleepwalking state. R V Samina Malik, 2008, CA, Counsel in the Court of Appeal in a case successfully challenging the conviction of a Defendant known as the “Lyrical Terrorist” who had been convicted under section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000. R V Omar Brooks, 2008, Kingston Crown Court, Leading Counsel in a three month trial acting for the second of eight Defendants, all charged with terrorist offences. R V Terry Ryan, 2007, CA Counsel dealing with a successful sentencing appeal in a money laundering allegation. R V Samina Malik, 2007, Central Criminal Court, Leading Counsel in a case charging a Defendant known as the “Lyrical Terrorist” with terrorist offences. ACTIONS AGAINST THE POLICE Ian Jackson v Chief Constable of Sussex 2009, High Court tried in Brighton. Counsel in a case where the client was assaulted by police using a police baton. The Claimant received an award of damages and costs and received an apology in open court and in writing from the Deputy Chief Constable of Sussex for the injury that was caused.
