“I think that the most serious problems is that we have is that the data
that we have for loggerhead are old, and its from one particular
region, I mean, the data that our loggerhead model is based on, which
was originally published in, you know, the work was done in 1983 and
1984, you know 20 years ago, based on data that was collected in the
1970s from Little Cumberland Island in Georgia, which was the
primary source of data. We now know that there are subdivided
populations. There are four or five regional subpopulations and we
only have vital rates data from one and, you know, I guess I never
imagined that when we did this model back in the 1980s that it would
still be the one that’s used for management, that it would have been
updated and improved and made more elaborate and so on so.
Basically there is a need for updating the data.”
