FAQ’s McKee Road Extension What is the McKee Road Extension? The McKee Road Extension is a proposed road that will extend the existing alignment of McKee Road from its current end at Pleasant Plains in Matthews to Stevens Mill Road in Stallings. This project is a part of the Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MUMPO) Thoroughfare Plan. How much of that project will be discussed at the September 8 meeting? The September 8 meeting will focus on the part of the extension from Campus Ridge Road to Stevens Mill Road. The alignment from Pleasant Plains to Campus Ridge Road has already been determined. Does the proposal differ from what is currently planned on the Thoroughfare Plan? Yes. The existing alignment on the Thoroughfare Plan shows the McKee Road Extension ending at Campus Ridge Road. What is now being planned will extend McKee Road across Independence Boulevard and tie into Stevens Mill Road. What is the need for changing the alignment? The Levine Campus of Central Piedmont Community College has been growing at an astounding rate. Current access to the campus is in need of improvement to safely and efficiently accommodate traveler to the campus and existing residents in the area. Additionally, the Hendrick Automotive Group has submitted a rezoning petition to the Town of Matthews that involves the construction of an auto mall consisting of automotive dealerships and a mix of other land uses that will complement the CPCC campus. Longer term, the Charlotte Area Transit System is proposing a station in the vicinity of the campus with a Park-n-Ride lot. Additionally, the proximity of existing CPCC Lane to I-485 will not allow for continued connection to US 74 when the Monroe Connector is completed. Therefore, the intersection/interchange point needs to move east of its current connection. The new alignment will allow for easier east-west travel and will provide an alternate for local drivers who don’t want, or need, to use I-485. Who will build the road? The Hendrick Automotive Group has committed to building the road on their property. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) or others will be responsible for the rest of the road’s construction. Are any other parts of the road planned to be built soon? NCDOT plans to start construction in 2012 on the part of the road that runs from John Street to Campus Ridge Road. What will happen where the road crosses the railroad tracks? At this point it’s unclear how the road will cross the tracks. Negotiations have begun with officials of the CSX Railroad. It is possible that a bridge over the tracks will be required, or a regular crossing with gates and warning signals may be installed. Page 1 of 2 FAQ’s McKee Road Extension How many lanes will the road have? The road is currently proposed to have four lanes, and include a median. Only two lanes may be built at first. The other two will be added when traffic volumes increase enough to warrant a fourlane road. Are there any predictions on how many people will use the road? Based on the latest 2030 MUMPO model with the extension of McKee Road to Stevens Mill Road and connectivity to US 74, McKee Road Extension is projected to carry approximately 26,000 vehicles per day (vpd) between Pleasant Plains Road and Old Monroe Road; 19,300 vpd between Old Monroe Road and Campus Ridge Road; 13,200 vpd between Campus Ridge Road and Matthews-Indian Trail Road; and 11,600 vpd between Matthews-Indian Trail Road and US 74. Will there be sidewalks and bike lanes on the new road? Yes How wide will the road be? The minimum amount of right-of-way for a major thoroughfare is 100 feet. It will likely have to be slightly wider to accommodate the sidewalks and bike lanes. What will the speed limit be on McKee Road? That has not been determined, but roads similar to this one typically have a posted speed limit of 45 mph. How will it connect with the Monroe Connector? The Connector in this specific area has two alternatives: D and E/G. The road will intersect US 74 at a point outside the project area if Alternative D is selected. The road is being proposed to cross US 74 on the E/G alternative with a bridge. Traffic evaluations to connect ramps to and from the north on US 74 to this bridge are in progress. Will I be able to get to Hwy 74 from this new road? Yes, the road will be connected to US 74 as a standard at-grade intersection until the Monroe Connector is constructed. When the connector is constructed, the actual connection depends on the alternative selected.
