• • • • Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug, according to the 2004 National Household Survey, with an estimated 14.6 million users. Smoking marijuana deposits 3-5 times more tar into the lungs than 1 filtered cigarette. Smoking marijuana can harm an unborn fetus by reducing oxygen supply. Marijuana and driving do not mix. Smoking marijuana results in: o Tunnel vision o Slowed reflexes o Unusual reaction to light and sound The physical effects of marijuana use include: o Increased heart rate o Reddening of the eyes o Dryness in mouth and throat The psychological effects of marijuana use may include, a feeling of relaxation, accompanied by: o Impairment of short term memory o Reduced ability to perform tasks requiring concentration, reactions and coordination Marijuana can interfere with learning, thinking, reading, verbal and math skills.
