Course Content
A broad based course which includes some practical working in the university’s salons. The students will participate in the basics of hairdressing and grooming. Whilst studying in the salon the students will help with reception work and discover the importance of customer care. Other studies will also include the effect that chemicals have in the industry and how hairdressing can be organised into a profitable business. Students will complete a portfolio without the need to sit a formal exam to achieve their qualification aim. If you need to develop your basic skills in English, Maths and IT and need more time to think about your future career then this is the course for you. Students have the opportunity to work in small groups with extra study support as well as help in dealing with problems through their personal tutor. learners on this course are supported by a learning Mentor. The Mentor’s role is to help students complete the course successfully. This may involve supporting their classroom learning but also providing support with other personal issues that might arise during the course.

Hairdressing NVQ2 Apprenticeship
duration Two years location Reading Course Code 5HD HAF A01R

entry requirements Aged between 16 and 24 years of age and a full-time employed trainee in a commercial salon. Although apprenticeship funding is for a specific age range, adults over 25 can also access our training for the same qualifications – please see Student Services for our part-time course guide and information on the Train to Gain programme. Whilst no formal qualifications are required, acceptance onto this course is by interview and subject to satisfactory references and a successful skills test. A positive school report or employer reference must be available at interview. You should have a good standard of general education, speech, hygiene and personal grooming. An even temperament showing patience, with a genuine interest in working with people, is essential.

Course Content
Your employer will release you to attend study one day a week. Your time will largely be spent in practical sessions, working with clients and other students. The rest of your time will be spent studying theoretical and technical aspects of the hairdressing profession. Essential aspects of this qualification include Key Skills in Communication and Number and Employment rights and responsibilities.
