What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and in an online

marketplace dominated by major search engines (such as

Google, Yahoo!, and MSN), it’s vital to the sales and

communication health of your website.

Essentially, search engine optimization improves your rankings when people

look up a keyword related to your industry in a search engine. For

instance, let’s say you run a landscaping business in New Jersey. If a

consumer types “New Jersey landscapers” into Google, the level to which

you optimize your site will, in large part, dictate your placement within

the results.

Wondering how high up you need to be in the list? Consider this statistic,

recently cited in the Wall Street Journal®: “Studies show that Web users

predominantly click on the top four results for any particular search, and

then move on,” says Shar VanBoskirk, senior analyst for Forrester

Research Inc. in Cambridge, Mass. “Very few dig more than three pages

into results.” - That’s what makes SEO so important.

Search engine optimization is the art and science of publishing information and marketing

it in a manner that helps search engines understand your information is relevant to relevant

search queries.

How SEO works

Effective Search Engine Optimization is a multifaceted and

ongoing process. The major components of an effective SEO

strategy include but are not limited to:

1. Selection of appropriate keywords and phrases, and their consistent

use throughout your website

2. Develop robust and relevant site content that incorporates those

keywords

3. Periodic submission of your website pages to the search engines

4. Strategic keyword purchases that will increase website traffic

5. Wide distribution of optimized press releases

6. Setup links to your site from as many trusted partner sites as possible

7. Smart online ad purchases that improve site visibility

Importance of Online

Keywords

It’s not enough to simply increase website traffic – We want to target

and attract site visitors who are likely to become customers.

That’s where keywords become important.

Keywords are used in two ways:

1. Purchased: Keywords are “purchased” through a search engine

bidding process. This can guarantee you to be listed above your

competitors.

2. Organic: Keywords are found “organically,” which refers to how well

search engines view your website. Search results are listed predominantly

relevant to website content.

The most effective SEO strategies utilize both.

Purchasing Keywords

Wondering what it means to “buy” a keyword?

In reality, it’s a bidding process. The major search engines allow you to

bid on keywords that are relevant to your business and website

content. When a person does a search on one of those keywords, the

highest bidder on a keyword gets placed first at the top of a search

results page.

Of course, the more generic the keyword, the more expensive it will be.

But, don’t fret – as it turns out, more specific (and less expensive)

keywords can be the most valuable for many businesses.

Specific Keyword Phrases

To help you consider the power of a well-chosen keyword, here’s an example.

Let’s say that you’re a local supplier of landscape materials, based in New

Jersey. You could purchase keywords such as “landscape supplies” or

“landscape materials,” in an effort to court favorable rankings with the

major search engines. But here’s the thing – suppliers nationwide are

going to be bidding on those very same words. As with anything else, the

bidding process for keyword purchases can drive up the price: the more

people want the keyword, the more it will cost.

A smarter – and more cost-effective – approach is to choose more specific

terms, relative to both your product line and/or your location. So

“landscape supplies New Jersey” or “New Jersey landscape materials”

might be cheaper, while also more likely to attract site visitors who run a

better chance of becoming customers.
