Going to School is „Not Compulsory‟
Councils in England are being reminded by the Department for Education and Skills that it is the legal right of parents to educate their children at home if they wish. Proposed guidelines on "elective home education", to be issued by the government department, stress that education is compulsory but schooling is not. It states that councils should offer support to home educators, and parents must see that their children are suitably educated. But the authorities have no right to enter people's homes or make routine checks on children's progress. There are no plans for compulsory registration of home educated children but guidelines are being issued for the first time pointing out that it is fundamental to the English system that the responsibility for educating children rests on the parents. Parents must provide efficient full time education suitable to their children‟s age, ability and aptitude and any special education needs. Most parents meet this requirement by sending their children to school, but there is an unknown number of children being home educated. The proposed guidance calls on local authorities to “identify children in danger of missing education” and to intervene only if they have good reason to believe that parents are not providing suitable education. It is stated that it would be sensible for parents to provide information to the authorities if asked to do so. There are several reasons today why parents chose home education, such as distance from school, dissatisfaction with the state system, bullying, a child‟s unwillingness or inability to go to school and special education needs. These are besides religious belief, which is the most common reason for choosing home tuition.

More parents of the Christian faith are being constrained to consider Home Education today because of the rapid increase in God dishonouring teaching and practice in the state school system. It is encouraging to learn that our government recognises the parent‟s choice in the education of their children through its proposed guidelines. We return thanks to God for this liberty which is not the case in some European countries. For parents dissatisfied with state schooling, home education is not an easy choice to make in terms of time and cost. The daily duty of teaching usually falls to the mother amidst all the other household chores and family responsibilities, and there is no financial support from central government or local authorities. All teaching material and examination entrance fees have to be paid for by the family themselves. However those who chose home education in the fear of the Lord see this as a sacrifice worth making. CVE is not set up to advocate home education above state or private school education, but aims to be supportive of all Christian parents and children in whatever form education takes.

King Herod‟s Tomb Found
Ehud Netzer, an Israeli archaeologist from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, claims to have found the tomb of Herod the Great at Herodium, a site south of Jerusalem. Professor Netzer has been searching for over thirty years for the tomb of Herod the Great. His excavations uncovered an ancient staircase, described by the first century historian Josephus Flavius, built specifically for Herod‟s funeral procession. This staircase led Prof. Netzer to the hill top burial site where fragments of a lavishly decorated coffin were found. No bones were found. Pofessor Netzer claims these were most likely removed by the Jews when they occupied this

site when they fought against Rome between 66 and 72 AD. Herod the Great is acclaimed for his vast building projects which besides many palaces and temples included the city and port of Caesarea on the Mediterranean coast and the fortress at Masada in the Judean Dessert. Herod was appointed King of Judea by the Roman authorities in 37 BC after his brutal siege and conquest of Jerusalem in which his soldiers mercilessly killed Jews and he himself daily killed any one of the Sanhedrin who opposed him. He took all the gold and silver to himself and in his greed consumed all that the Jews owned. The misery of the Jews at that time was increased because the fields had not been sowed or tilled; it being the sabbatical year. Such misery was most likely witnessed by Zacharias and Elisabeth from the hill country of Judea, and by Simeon and Anna in Jerusalem. In the eighteenth year of his reign Herod replaced the Jew‟s temple built by Zerubbabel with a more magnificent one which took him over nine years to build. Herod grew more cruel in his last years, yet it was in his days that the fullness of time came when Jesus the Son of God would be born of Mary in Bethlehem. His evil nature to kill all those who would oppose him drove him at that time to slay all children two years old and under in Bethlehem. Herod did not live much longer. He had dreadful diseases in his intestines, his feet swelled and his thighs and limbs were full of worms. He died in Jericho. Prior to his death he locked up the most noble of the Jews in a place there called the Hippodrome, with the order that they be killed at his death. His reason was that the Jews, who hated him so much, would not rejoice at his death but have sorrow. Mercifully, Herod‟s sister Salome set them at liberty before he died. Herod‟s body was carried twenty five miles in great procession from Jericho to Herodium for his burial. This place is now claimed to be discovered. But what of Herod‟s soul? Two thousand years already in hell is but nothing compared to an eternity in that dreadful place where mercy through Christ, who he sought to destroy, will never come. There is no grandeur there. The burial site at Herodium will be a solemn place for remembrance of God‟s judgements for sin. [Psalm 73:17-19].

Moral Recovery UK
An organization of the above name is publishing and distributing leaflets giving information on sex education material being used in state schools. One leaflet that has come to our notice explains that children are being taught that it is acceptable to indulge in sexual activity provided precautions are taken against conception or contacting disease. It states the Education Act of 1993 that sex education should be provided to give children regard to moral considerations and the value of family life. However the content of education material published by the Family Planning Association, such as the leaflet titled „4Boys‟ implies that no form of sexual conduct is perverted or wrong. Other leaflets promote experimenting with sexual activity to find what is „right for you‟. The Moral Recovery U.K. leaflet states “Modern sex education lessons undermine children‟s natural sense of modesty and respectability. They cruelly lead to abnormal and immoral practices, which inevitably lead to ill-health and unhappiness.” Actions parents can take are recommended such as speaking to the Headteacher or Chairman of School Governors and to consider insisting on the legal right to withdraw children from such lessons. It outlines the Scriptural principles of sexual activity as only within marriage; faithfulness in marriage; and homosexuality forbidden. It states in addition the Scriptural principles of modesty in dress and language, and respect to be shown between man and woman. The address of Moral Recovery U.K. is given as 66 Chippingfield, Harlow, Essex, CM17 0DJ

England „one of the World‟s Worst Places for Children‟
So says the Children’s Commissioner for England, Prof. Sir Albert Aynsley-Green, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph (17/05/2007). He has warned that the way children are treated by adults is a crisis at the heart of our society. The commissioner was appointed by the government in March 2005 to champion the

rights of children. As mentioned in the previous issue of this newsletter, he is preparing a dossier for the United Nations on children‟s „rights‟ which declares that parents who smack their children are abusing them. He has now launched a five year plan for the organization which he leads. Launching his plan he said that “Children exist in a state of great uncertainty, they feel unsafe on the streets, they often have domestic violence at home and bullying at school and they feel demonized by the adult population”. He criticizes „endless testing‟ in schools and the use of Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOS) on those who commit offences, and means used by the authorities to control children loitering in particular public places. He declares he is angry at the state of so many children‟s lives – “those in crumbling inner city estates, in poverty, or struggling to access services that should be free and easily available to them”. He goes on to say, “But who cares enough to help?” The five year plan called “11 Million” (the assessed number of children in England) focuses on issues such as youth justice; anti social behaviour; asylum and trafficking; mental health and enjoying education. It is not reported whether the plan has any focus on the family unit and its increasing breakdown in society, which is the major contributor to problems amongst children in England today. Many school teachers give witness that the background to problems with many young children is the lack of a caring family unit of husband and wife and loving correction within a framework of acceptable behaviour. Whilst we can share in the concerns of the commissioner at the state of the lives of many children, and agree that there “is a crisis at the heart of our society”, we believe the issues he wishes to focus on are not the right issues. The Apostle Paul‟s epistle to the Colossians chapter 3 verses 18 to 21 sets out the standard for happiness in a child‟s home. It is clearly evident that many troubles stem out of deviation from these verses of Holy Scripture. Sir Albert has said “My door is always openas are my ears. When nobody else will listen to a child, I will. Together we‟ll improve children‟s lives, rights and happiness”. Will he listen if told of the fundamental problem of parents not exercising their duty through

providing a loving family home? Surely it is the duty of us all to speak to him.

When it pleased the Lord
In the Lord‟s time, a never to be forgotten day came. On Friday June 20th 1941 I was attending Secondary School and in the library I quoted a scripture to a fellow student in jest. Like an arrow to the heart, the thought came "You have sinned the unpardonable sin". The state of my mind I cannot describe, I felt I would drop into hell at any moment. Satan suggested I might as well take my life and showed me the means, but in the next few days there began to be a hope that there might be mercy even for me. But I felt the justness of my condemnation (a mark of distinction between a natural conviction and a Holy Spirit one). The poet‟s words were mine:Should sudden vengeance seize my breath, I must pronounce thee just in death; And if my soul were sent to Hell, Thy righteous law approves it well. This was the conviction of the dying thief "We indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds” [Luke 23:41]. I would often find some secret place and fall on my knees begging for mercy. My mother came in on one occasion and found me on my knees. She didn‟t say anything but just gave me a kiss. Now, as a parent and grandparent, I can appreciate how she felt. On the Lord‟s Day morning July 6th 1941, before getting up, I was weeping and mourning over my sins and these words came with such power to my soul "Thy sins which are many are all forgiven thee". I leaped out of bed and fell on my knees praising and thanking God for His mercy through Jesus Christ. However I was soon tempted that it was all a delusion. Next Lord‟s Day morning I was praying for a confirmation when the Lord spoke “I Jesus died to redeem thee, walk in the way.” The Lord‟s words to me "Walk in the way‟ I realised meant walking in the fear of the Lord, but also felt it meant in the Ordinances of baptism and the Lord‟s Supper. At this time I was only fourteen years old and very shy and I put it off. Sadly, with shame, I confess it was nearly eighteen years later before I was baptised. Perhaps because of this

I came into much darkness and Psalm 107:1021 was my experience for many months. Then the temptation that I had sinned unpardonably returned. Once I was reading from Pilgrim‟s Progress which describes how Christian was in the valley of the shadow of death and devils would creep up behind him and whisper evil words in his ear so that he thought he had said them himself and was greatly distressed. This was a comfort to me. In our now more mature years, I realise the truth of Paul‟s words "If then I do that which I would not.... it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.‟ [Romans 7:16,17]
If you have an experience when young or in education which we could print to the honour of God, do let us know. All accounts will be treated in the utmost confidence unless you wish otherwise.
