This change reflects “The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997”. “No person shall enter a confined space to carry out work for any purpose unless it is not reasonably practicable to achieve that purpose without such entry”.

In the 2002 Building Regulations update, the maximum depth for a shallow inspection chamber has been increased from 1m to 1.2m.

A reduced access inspection chamber has an access opening reduced to a maximum of 350mm to prevent man entry. Inspection and maintenance operations are carried out from the surface using remotely operated equipment. The 2002 update of the Building Regulations allows for the use of reduced access inspection chambers as an alternative to a manhole at depths greater than 1.2m down to a maximum of 6m (as set out in BS 7158:2001). The OSMA Non-Entry Inspection Chamber system can be installed to a maximum depth of 3m.

Introduction to OSMA Inspection Chambers and Covers Inspection Chamber Covers
The regulations have been updated to reflect health and safety issues on site. Extract from Part H: “Small lightweight access covers should be secured (for example with screws) to deter unauthorised access (for example by children).” A lightweight access cover is defined as a cover that meets the requirements of standard loading classification A15 (1.5T). Larger plastic lightweight covers and frames, however, are typically designed to withstand a load greater than 1.5T, usually 3 – 3.5 T (30 – 35kN), which can be used in domestic driveways when surrounded by a concrete plinth. All Wavin Plastics Ltd lightweight access covers listed below are secured to the frame by means of screws to prevent unauthorised access. Certain products can also be secured to the inspection chamber shaft by means of eyebolts or screws ie. 4D943, 4D947 and 6D931.

Covers and Frames Round Cover and Frame 4D947 Features
The round cover and frame provides a high level of security via the dual fixing system. This enables the frame to be fixed to the shaft and the cover to the frame Designed for use with the Osma Universal Inspection Chamber Shaft (4D925) The polypropylene round cover and frame, when surrounded by a concrete plinth, can be used in situations with loading up to 30kN (3 Tonnes) i.e. domestic driveways Suitable for external use only

The Plastic Square Cover and Frame 4D943
A square plastic cover and frame manufactured from black polypropylene. The improved 4D943 has a 450mm diameter opening making it suitable for use at a maximum depth to invert of 1.2 metres. The improved unit also has the added benefit of being suitable for use with both the Universal Inspection Chamber and Non-entry Inspection Chamber systems

Cover and Frame Restrictor Ring
The 6D932 Cover and Frame Restrictor Ring enables the 4D943 Plastic Cover and Frame to be restricted to a 350mm diameter, therefore making it suitable for use in deep applications. The code 6D931 has been set up to order these units as one.

making the unit suitable for use at depths greater than 1.2 metres. With the new system being suitable for use on both the Universal and Non-entry inspection chamber systems the following recommended maximum depth should be followed: Max. Depth to Invert (m) Universal Inspection Chambers (UIC) 1.2 Non-Entry Inspection Chambers (NIC) 3.3

Installation Guidelines
1. Position the cover and frame over the Universal Inspection Chamber shaft (4D925). 2. Remove the cover and fix the frame to the shaft by tightening the three fixing screws through the shaft wall. 3. Once the frame is fixed to the shaft replace the cover by aligning the arrow on the cover with the groove on the frame and tighten the screws ensuring the cover is fixed in place. 4. In situations requiring a loading up to 30kN (3.0 Tonnes) i.e. domestic driveways, a concrete plinth (150mm x 150mm) of suitable strength should be cast around the cover and frame.

Installation Instructions
Withdraw the screws fixing the cover to the frame and lift the cover clear The unit should be in position with all screws fixing the frame to shaft tightened and not protruding Insert the restrictor ring into the 450mm access of the frame ensuring the unit sits flat and the three lugs snap into place Replace the cover and re-insert the

The NIC Telescopic Adaptor provides height adjustment and accommodation of sloping ground for a range of standard covers and frames within the OSMA Below Ground Drainage systems range.

Product Features/Benefits
Can be used with 4D943, 4D945 and 4D946 Gives the above covers and frames telescopic properties when used with the Non-entry Inspection Chamber system 350mm internal restriction making the unit suitable for deep access chambers i.e. greater than 1.2 metres

Installation Instructions
1. Separate the 4D943 PP Square Cover and Frame by removing the four screws holding the components together. 2. Withdraw the four philips screws from the spigot of the frame (these are not required for assembly). 3. The 4D943 should fit over the top of the Telescopic Adaptor i.e. a socket, spigot connection respectively. 4. Once the units are aligned push the items together. Ensure the frame is pushed fully home, when this is done the frame should be sitting on the shoulder of the adaptor around the full circumference of the unit. 5. With the frame in place tighten the top three eyebolts to fix the items together. This is to ensure they cannot be separated 6. Replace the cover into the frame, reposition the screws to fix the components together and tighten as required.
