All Y Need To Know About
Lotto Powerball Changes
Lotto Powerball is getting bigger and better, with the minimum First Division jackpot increasing from $1 million to a massive
$3 million. To enable this, the number of Powerball numbers is increasing from 8 to 10 numbers. This is likely to mean
Below gives you background on the game change, the details of the coupon phase-out and some information on the new-look
Powerball launching in October.
The Powerball Changes
What are the changes being made to Powerball?
Powerball is getting bigger and better from 28 October 2007, with the minimum First Division prize increasing to start from
$3 million, instead of the current $1 million. The choice of Powerball numbers is also being increased from 8 to 10 numbers.
Is the Powerball price increasing?
No, Powerball will remain 50 cents per line, with a minimum of four lines necessary to play the game.
Why is Powerball being changed?
Powerball is New Zealand’s biggest jackpotting game, but the week one minimum prize of $1 million is lower than that
of Big Wednesday (which offers $2 million plus two luxury cars). By raising the minimum First Division prize to $3 million,
Powerball confirms its position as the biggest jackpotting game in New Zealand from week one.
What will happen to the odds?
Increasing the number of Powerball balls from 8 to 10 means that the odds of winning First Division will increase from
1 in 31 million to 1 in 38 million. This in turn should result in larger jackpots.
What are the benefits of these changes?
The First Division minimum prize will be $3 million, plus the jackpots should become larger.
How many times has Powerball been changed before?
Never, this is the first time we have made any changes to Powerball since its launch in November 2001.
The New Powerball Launch
How is the new Powerball being launched?
From the week commencing 21 October 2007 we are holding a special ‘Must Be Won’ week for Lotto Powerball. The
“Must Be Won” draw will take place on Saturday 27 October. The new-look Powerball game will launch on 28 October 2007,
with full information communicated to customers through advertising, in-store information and on our website.

What is a ‘Must Be Won’ week?
A ‘Must Be Won’ week is where the First Division prize is guaranteed to be won at whatever level it is at for that week.
If there is no First Division winner for the draw, the First Division prize pool is added to the prize pool of the next highest
prize division where there is a winner. If there is more than one winner of that division, each winner will receive an equal
share of the First Division prize pool.
Why is there a ‘Must Be Won’ week, why not wait until the jackpot is won?
Due to the change in the game odds we needed to set an exact date for the game change over. This means we were
unable to wait until a jackpot has been struck. A ‘Must Be Won’ week enables us to set the exact date for the change-over.
Will the current 8-number Powerball coupons still be valid after the new-look Powerball game is introduced?
No, once the changes are launched on 28 October, the 8-number Powerball coupons will be obsolete and will not be
accepted by our terminals.
When can the new 10-number Powerball coupons start being used?
The 10-number coupons can only be used from 28 October 2007.
What if I don’t want to change my Powerball coupon?
Whilst we appreciate that many customers like to use the same coupon, the technical requirements of implementing
this game change mean customers must change their coupon if they wish to continue to select their own numbers.
The 8-number Powerball coupons will no longer be valid.
What if a customer wants to play all Powerball numbers from 1-10?
The new Powerball coupons have 8 boards rather than 10 which means that any customer who wants to play all ten
numbers will need to complete two Powerball coupons with a minimum of four boards completed on each coupon.
Powerball General Information
How do you play Powerball?
To play Powerball, you must first purchase a Lotto ticket and choose to add Powerball to the ticket. Your ticket will show six
Lotto numbers, followed by a single Powerball number on each line.
If you are getting a dip (Power Dip or Triple Dip), you can either let the terminal randomly select the Powerball numbers for
you, or you can choose to have every line with the same Powerball number of your choice. If you are using a coupon, you can
pick your Powerball number for every line.
From 28 October 2007, you can chose a Powerball number from between 1 and 10.
How do you win Powerball?
As Powerball is linked to Lotto, you must first win a Lotto Division prize. If you win a Lotto Division prize and have the correct
Powerball number on the same winning line, then you also win the equivalent Powerball Division prize – two prizes in one!
How high can Powerball jackpot?
Powerball can jackpot to $30 million.
What happens if Powerball is not won when it reaches the maximum prize?
If Powerball reaches $30 million, it automatically becomes a ‘Must Be Won’ week, where the top prize will be added to
the next highest Division with a winning ticket and shared evenly among the winners of that Division.
