Photosynthesis
• The conversion of solar energy to chemical potential energy
• Takes place in the cholorplast
• There are two stages:

1. Light Stage
• Requires light
• Occurs on the thylakoid membrane
• Chlorophyll (with hemp of antennae pigments) captures light
  energy
• This energy is used to split water molecules into oxygen and
  “high energy” electrons

Water + light              O2 + H+ + high energy electrons


2. Dark Stage (Light Independent Stage)
• Does not require light (occurs at night and during the day)
• Uses energy created in the light stage to make glucose by
  joining together six carbon dioxide molecules (Calvin Cycle)
• Occurs in the stroma
• Light energy is now held in the bonds in glucose
