How to have a healthy and safe outing As the weather begins to get warmer and the days longer throughout Central Oregon, dog owners are allowed more and more time to walk their pets. One of the most important things pet owners can do is to make sure their animals get plenty of exercise. Picking out an appropriate leash and collar is the best way to ensure a healthy and happy walk for both dog and owner. What is the best leash for my dog? There are so many options when it comes to selecting a leash for a dog. Here at Bend Pet Express we highly recommend leashes that allow owners to have the most control over their dogs. Lupine makes a great line of leashes for walking smaller dogs. Lupine leashes allow smaller dogs to explore the world around them without getting tangled up with other obstacles, including other dogs. For bigger dogs, the 18” Coastal Traffic Lead can be helpful. This leash provides lots of control over the dog by allowing the owner to keep the leash closer to the body and providing more restraint for the dog. What about collars? Spindrift offers a Cozy Agility Slip Lead that is a collar and leash combined. The fleece-lined collar slips easily over the dog’s neck and fits tightly enough to keep control over the dog. Silverfoot and Lupine also offer comfortable and safe collars that connect easily to leashes. One of the most important things pet owners can do is to make sure that their animals get plenty of exercise. What are good tools for a pulling dog? A great device to discourage a dog from pulling on its leash is a headcollar. A headcollar fits snuggly around a dog’s snout and over the head. When a dog begins to pull, the owner can hold the leash firmly, without jerking, causing the dog’s head to turn to the side and stop pulling. When the dog’s head is forced to the side it redirects, and stops, the forward-pulling motion. Headcollars also take the pressure off a dog’s neck. The Premier Gentle Leader Headcollar and the Halti Headcollar are two great options. All Bend Pet Express employees are willing to answer any questions that you may have about the best devices to make your walk the best it can be. 2 We offer all Spindrift products. We want to assure everyone that at Bend Pet Express we have been trying our best to keep as updated as possible. We have pulled all of the foods we carried which had been affected by the recall, and plan to keep these foods off of our shelves until we have been assured that they are 100 % safe. However, there are still many customers (both new and old) who are worried about the foods they are feeding. We pride ourselves on carrying only the highest quality foods within our stores and we have many safe and healthy options for dogs and cats. All of the foods affected were recalled because they had wheat gluten and rice protein, imported from China, which contained traces of melamine and other harmful substances. One way to completely avoid serving a recalled food is to feed a grainfree diet to your pet. Grain-free diets still provide pets with all of the vitamins and nutrients as their grain-based counterparts. Dogs and cats actually do not need grains as part of their diets, as both can thrive on high quality animal proteins and fats. We carry an assortment of grainfree diets from companies including Innova Evo, Nature’s Variety and Solid Gold. n Events Calendar Low-Cost Vaccine Clinics Bend Spay & Neuter Project Dates: July 21 - Eastside, September 15 - Eastside Time: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. BendSNIP will offer low-cost vaccines. Summer Safety Tips When the weather warms up, take some simple precautions to keep your pets happy & healthy. • Always carry a gallon thermos filled with cold, fresh water when traveling with your pet. • NEVER leave your pet alone in a vehicle—hyperthermia can be fatal. Even with the windows open, a parked car can quickly become a furnace. Parking in the shade is not the solution, as the sun shifts. • Provide fresh water and plenty of shade for animals kept outdoors. Bring your dog or cat inside during the heat of the day to rest in a cool part of the house. • Be especially sensitive to older, ill, overweight, or snub-nosed animals (like bulldogs, pugs, or persians) in hot weather. • Thunderstorms and fireworks cause anxiety for many pets and cause them to run away. Remember to keep current i.d. on your pets. Try Mellow Dog biscuits for a natural calming aid. What’s New Down Dog Bakery Looking for more ways to spoil your canine companions?
