An Organic Intellectual Speaks Up: Social Movements & Human Rights – The Philippine Case
Marie was nominated to the Human Rights Defender Award (Netherlands) and the John Humphrey Freedom Award (Canada). On behalf of KARAPATAN, Marie facilitated the meeting of victims of extrajudicial killings and human rights organizations with the team of Prof. Philip Alston, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, summary, and arbitrary killings. She filed complaints about extrajudicial killings before the United Nations Human Rights Council both in Geneva, Switzerland and in New York, U.S.A. Marie was named independent observer of the peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front (NDF).
