Story of the Week Assignment Seven (In Class Assignment ) John Henry Races the Stream Drill Skills: Story sequence chart, dress-ups, and subject and “ly” sentence openers 1. Read the attached Tall Tale about John Henry in Theme One of Houghton Miflin (pages 114-118) with your class. Reread the story and discuss with classmates. Make sure that you fully comprehend it. If you don’t understand any part of the story please ask me or a partner for help. (Remember, a dictionary can provide you with the meanings of words that you might not understand.) 2. With your class, outline this story on the story sequence chart. Put three or four words on each line answering the questions corresponding to that paragraph. Choose the words that will help you remember the elements of the story. 3. After you complete the story sequence chart, ask me or a friend to listen to you retell the story. Using your story sequence chart, verbally make sentences out of your key words. This will test your outline. Do your key words remind you of the key elements of the story? 4. From your outline, and without looking back (unless you really need to), write a three paragraph story about John Henry. Include the following dress-ups in each paragraph. - “ly” (Use your pink adverb list to help) - who/which clause - strong verb - quality adjective - when, while, where, as, since, if, although, because clause 5. You must also include the sentence openers: - 1. subject - 2. “ly” (Use your pink adverb list to help) Remember, your draft should be double spaced. 6. When you complete your final draft, underline your dress-ups and identify your subject opener by placing a 1 in the margin and identify your “ly” sentence opener by placing a number 3 in your margin. Then grade yourself using the rubric. 7. Staple your final copy on top of your story sequence chart, edited rough draft, and grading rubric.
