August 2007

by Mike Prero

[The following is Jim Moffett’s November, 1985 listing of Hillbilly Sets] “Over the years there have been many lists of the „Hillbilly‟ sets. This revised list is a composite of those [covers] put out by Superior, Match Corp. of America, Monarch, Regal, Strike-Rite (Canada), Diamond, Chicago Match and other various, miscellaneous Companies. There has been no effort on my part to try and distinguish between the various companies as many of them put out identical or similar sets. Unless indicated otherwise, all sets are with the strikers on the front. The dates indicated are the dates that they were first issued. All covers listed are from my collection. It is believed that they stopped issuing them in the early 1970‟s. There are a total of 24 sets with a total of 121 covers. (21 sets of 5 covers, 2 sets of 6 covers, and 1 set of 4 covers)”

Parker Pens
Now, at first glance, this does seem to be a rather off-the-wall topic, I admit. But, it‟s a name that struck an immediate chord with me as soon as I saw the cover shown here. Why? Because it‟s a name I grew up with...a familiar part of my memories and my culture. As a student, I went through loads of pens, of course, and when I came across a Parker pen, I knew I had the crème-de la crème of pens! It sounds as if I‟m doing an advertisement for the company, but it‟s true—That‟s the way I remember them—they felt right; they wrote great! These days, as a teacher, I still use loads of pens, but I don‟t seem to see the Parker name anymore. Of course, I don‟t really have time normally to even bother looking. And, Parker pens would be just a tad bit more expensive than the one that make it through the school system (which are purchased in bulk)...So, just who‟s responsible for these little wonders? “George Parker, the founder, had previously been a sales agent for the John Holland Gold Pen Company. He received his first fountain pen related patent in 1889. In 1894 Parker received a patent on his "Lucky Curve" feed, which was claimed to draw excess ink back into the pen body when the pen was not in use. The Lucky Curve feed was used in various forms until 1928. From the 1920s to the 1960s, before the development of the ballpoint pen, Parker was either number one or number two in worldwide writing instrument sales. In 1931 Parker created Quink "quick drying ink" which eliminated the need for blotting and led to the development of the most widely used model of fountain pen in history (over $400 million worth of sales in its 30 year history) the Parker 51. Manufacturing facilities were set up over the years in Canada, United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Mexico, USA and Argentina. Parker pens were frequently selected (often as favorite pens of the signers) to sign important documents such as the World War II armistices, and commemorative editions were sometimes offered. In 1976 Parker acquired Manpower just as the temporary staffing market was surging. In time Manpower provided more revenue than the pen business. A 1982 spinoff, Sintered Specialties, Inc., became SSI Technologies, a manufacturer of automotive sensors. A management buyout in 1987 moved the company headquarters to Newhaven, East Sussex, England which was the original location of the Valentine Pen Company previously acquired by Parker. In 1993 Parker was acquired by the Gillette Company, which already owned the PaperMate brand, one of the best-selling disposable ballpoints. Gillette sold the writing instruments division in 2000 to Newell Rubbermaid, whose own Stationery Division, Sanford, became the largest in the world, owning such brand names as Rotring, Sharpie, Reynolds as well as Parker, PaperMate, Waterman and Liquid Paper. [ h t t p : / / e n . wikipedia.org/wiki/Parker_Pen_Company] So, Parker pens are still around, even after almost 120 years… Somehow, in this turbulent world...that makes me feel a little better!

Well, that‟s the list. Pretty impressive, huh? You could spend an entire collecting career just tryTahoka* ing to get a complete set of Texas county seats, never mind all of the Throckmorton* county seats in the country! Tilden Clem Pater, OH, [Lone Star Tulia Bulletin, Jan/Feb 1998] had this to say on the toughest of the tough... Tyler Uvalde Van Horn Vega Vernon Victoria Waco Waxahachie Weatherford Wellington Wharton Wheeler Wichita Falls Woodville* Zapata “The rarest and toughest in Texas is Mentone. Don Gingrich went there several years ago, and there were only a couple of buildings left standing in the entire town. And, of course, there were no covers. The cover shown to the left is from Kurt Freier, who was a Superior Match salesman back in the „60s. I bought a sizeable quantity of covers from him when he was selling overruns. He would have these covers printed for the really tough county seats in Texas so that collectors would have something for their collections. So, a true County Seat collector would not consider this to be a legitimate cover from that town. This cover is the only one that‟s ever been found with the name Mentone, Texas, on it (besides a Perkins Americana cover).” Sort of adds a new dimension to the word „challenging‟! But, for the brave of heart, at least you could see just how far you could get in this quest for Texas county seat covers. And, don‟t forget county seats actually change from time to time, so you‟d want to get a current listing.

Ben Jonson Set
I recently came across this set in a collection that I was g o i n g through. It‟s a six-cover, front-striker, 30-strike set from the Ben Jonson restaurant in San Francisco, one of the Lawry Associated Restaurants. Each of the six back p a n e l s features a quote by Ben Jonson, a c c om pa n ied by an appropriate drawing, looking like an old wood cut. This is a Diamond Match Co. set with a Los Angeles manumark, even though it‟s for a San Francisco restaurant...a fairly nice set.

An American Tour: 15
Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park
Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution. The park encompasses 333,000 acres and ranges from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unique hiking and camping opportunities. In 1906, Lorrin Thurston, a publisher, began a campaign to make this amazing area into a public park. On August 1, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the country's 13th national park into existence. It had taken 10 years, but the perseverance of Thurston paid off. At first, the park consisted of only the summits of Kilauea and Mauna Loa on Hawai'i and Haleakala on Maui. Eventually, Kilauea Caldera was added to the park, followed by the forests of Mauna Loa, the Ka'u Desert (the site of ancient warrior footprints set in ash), the rain forest of Ola'a, and the Kalapana archaeological area of the Puna/ Ka'u Historic District. In 1961, Haleakala was made a separate national park. Today, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park protects 377 square miles of the island's volcanic wonders and is a refuge for surviving native plants and animals. In 1980, UNESCO named Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park an International Biosphere Reserve because of its outstanding scenic and scientific values. The park was recognized for its important volcanic sites (including two of the world's most active volcanoes); its volcanic island ecosystem, which preserves one of the largest significant ecosystems on the Hawai'ian Islands; and its cultural and historic sites. The park was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.

out of all those full-books! So, where did they go? I actually have no idea! So, I‟m just guessing here, but could it be that, even though the manumarks say “FEATURE, these particular full-books were never actual Features to begin with? But why would that be? Hmmm….could they be overruns issued with just regular matches? They can‟t simply be errors; there are just too many of them. Perhaps some of our collectors who go back that far, or someone who was once inside the industry, might know the real story. I‟d love to find out!

Features!...Really?
We‟re all familiar with Lion Features...those beautiful fullbooks with the incredible art work of yesteryear on the matches (the likes of which we‟ll never see again...sigh!). But, did you ever wonder about all those Lion FEATURE and 21 “FEATURE” covers that are floating around (and there are a lot of them!) that aren‟t full -books anymore; they‟re just the covers. I have! I‟ve thought about it before, of course, but, this time, as I was updating the listing on Lion 21 “FEATURE” covers, it struck me again. There are currently 1,561 such covers listed, and at least 95% of those were simply stripped covers when I listed them...no matches! What‟s that all about? I can‟t believe that collectors stripped the art-laden matches
