Explanation of Dolch Vocabulary Words Each student will be responsible for learning sight words. These are words that should be read fluently, without trying to “sound out” the word. There are 12 lists that the students should know before the end of first grade. They are labeled by letter (list A, B, C, etc.) Here are the following goals for the students to have mastered the lists: End of the 1st 9 weeks: Master List C End of the 2nd 9 weeks: Master List F End of the 3rd 9 weeks: Master List I End of the 4th 9 weeks: Master List L These word lists make up 45 points of their grade each 9 weeks, so knowing the lists are important! I completed initial testing during the first two weeks of school and have given your child the list that is appropriate for them. It is a short sheet of words along with a set of flash cards that they can use to help them study. They should read the words each night for practice. Once they master that list, I will give them a new set of words. I know this is a little confusing, but once you get the hang of it, it will be a breeze! (All of the lists are posted on my website.) Thanks! Mrs. Wall
What is the difference between sight words and spelling words?? Sight words are words that are commonly seen in the books that we will be reading. It is important that students be able to read and understand these words. Students will be expected to read these words when given a word recognition test and be able to use them by completing a fill-in the blank test. The grades are recorded under the subject of reading. Spelling words are words that we will learn based on the phonics skill that we are covering that week. Students will be expected to spell them correctly on a written test given on Wednesdays. The grade will be recorded under the subject of spelling.
