Olive Ave. Sunnyvale, CA 94086 (408) 730-7300 The Registrar of Voters maintains voter records, conducts elections and answers questions about registration, voting, filing for elective office and voting districts. Voter Eligibility To vote in California, one must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of California,18 years of age or older by Election Day and registered at least 15 days before the election. Registered voters who move within 15 days of an election may vote in their old precinct. How to Register to Vote Californians can register by mail. Postage paid registration forms are available at the Registrar of Voters’ offices, city halls, public libraries, post offices, fire stations, Department of Motor Vehicles’ offices, city and county offices and federal offices. Registration in California is permanent. Once you have registered, you will not be removed from voter rolls for not voting. Re-Registration Voters must re-register by completing a new Registration form whenever they move, change their name or wish to change their party affiliation. Beginning in 1998, California established a “blanket primary” (titled open primary on the ballot.) In a blanket primary election, a voter may vote for one candidate for each partisan office regardless of party affiliation. However, voters must declare their party affiliation in order to vote for members of that party’s County Central Committee. (408) 246-6600 Voting Before each election, every registered voter receives a sample ballot, the address of the voter’s polling place and an absentee ballot request form. Before statewide elections, the California Secretary of State mails to each voting household a Ballot Pamphlet with information on statewide measures. Where and When to Vote Voters may vote from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day at the polling place indicated on the back of their sample ballot. Absentee Ballots Voters may obtain absentee ballots starting 15 days before an election. The ballot may be requested in person at the Registrar’s office or the ballot may be mailed to the voter upon written request. The request must be received by the Registrar at least 7 days before the election and must include the following information: • the voter’s name and home address • the voter’s mailing address if different • the voter’s signature People with physical disabilities or those who are otherwise unable to get to a polling place may apply for permanent absentee voter status. Voters may contact the Registrar for details. Completed absentee ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day at the Registrar’s office or at any polling place in the county. The voter’s signed authorization must accompany the ballot, which must be delivered to the polling place by an immediate family member or caregiver.
