LESSONS IN FORGIVENESS
Rabbi Eugene Markovitz ’45Y,R,B, spiritual leader of the Clifton (NJ) Jewish Center, died in September ’03. One of the most respected rabbis in Clifton, he gained national notice with his response after four boys spray-painted anti-Semitic graffiti on his house and the synagogue in 1989. He urged a judge to let him teach the boys about Judaism instead of sending them to jail. The episode inspired a television movie, “The Writing on the Wall,” which depicted his reconciliation with the vandals, one of whom became a Clifton police officer. Rabbi Markovitz and Rabbi Markovitz his late wife, Klara. was chaplain for the Clifton police and firefighters for 50 years. Also during his career, he served on local commissions that mediated race riots and rehabilitated delinquent youth. “One must never give up on young people. In Judaism, it’s literally a crime to do so,” he was quoted as saying in an article Time magazine published about the episode. Rabbi Markovitz was predeceased by Klara (Weiss), his wife of 50 years. Mikey’s courage in the face of his illness inspired Chancellor Norman Lamm ’49Y,B,R to call him a “legend.” At YU, Mikey became involved in student government, never complaining about “schlepping an oxygen tank from class to class,” according to his mother, Nina (Novetsky) Butler ’78S. During the summer while in college, Mikey volunteered at a camp for children with special needs, was active in the National Council of Synagogue Youth, and learned to play drums. From the time he was born, Mikey challenged the odds. Soon after birth, doctors gave Mikey little more than an hour to live. He lived 24 years, a time span, said Chancellor Lamm, filled with more achievement than the average lifetime. YU Review profiled Mikey in its Summer 2002 issue after he underwent a lung transplant.
