STUDENT EVALUATION OF PRIMARY INSTRUCTOR TEACHING John Latto Department of Integrative Biology Bio 1B: General Biology Summer 2005 Please comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the course and the instructor’s teaching. Suggestions for improvement are appreciated. • I thought that some of the exam questions were written in a confusing way and that it tested test taking skills rather than knowledge. • Wished some of the charts were posted on-line. Recordings really helpful for studying midterms are very fair. Great lecturer. • I e-mailed the instructor three times during the semester with conceptual questions and he responded within an hour with beautifully formulated and clear responses. • Random pictures he placed on slides always kept me awake. • Outstanding course, enjoyable well presented lectures. The only issue is the compressed time limit in the summer session. I wish it could be a little longer but with the time given, more material was covered than I expected. • I like the way the professor divided up the course in 3 sections. He is very organized and can explain concepts clearly by giving large amount of examples. • Get rid of multiple choices questions. It is the worst way to test student knowledge. • Latto is a solid professor. • Very enthusiastic teaching style, makes you feel more excited about the material. • Professor Latto was very organized and taught very well. • Excellent overall, but a bit boring at times. Dim light in VLSB makes you want to fall asleep. • Power point presentations can get lengthy at times. Volume of speakers need to be turned up higher. Fair exams but need more questions. • Very enthusiastic teaching the class. Sometimes may be difficult to understand. But all professors can be at time point. Good professor!! • The professor is very good. • Have all lecture notes in powerpoint would help a lot! • The midterms are hard and he didn’t respond to most students receiving B and C’s in the first midterm. I thought the midterm is going to last for 1:30 but it only lasted for 1:20. • I like English accents. Takes the class to a whole new level. Makes me feel like I’m at Oxford in plaid skirt and tasteful cardigan set. • The plant section is rushed and Latto tries to cram too much material in the time allotted. The course was disappointing – the multiple choice tests give little room to demonstrate knowledge, the labs were tedious and uninteresting. The text is good and Latto follows it closely, making it easy to reference lecture. • I actually enjoyed the class and succeeded in it without killing myself simply because I had a good teacher! • He seems very prepared for lectures sometimes the lectures can be boring but that’s probably due to the material and not the professor. 2 • Strengths – no single thing that stood out from the rest; “such is the flaw of excellence” Weaknesses – knock against Australians. Improvements – streamlining of plants/fungi section for summer session would be nice. • I like the British accent and the jokes. It made lectures fun. • The multiple choice exams did not leave much room for argument which left me a bit unsatisfied. However, there were clearly good reasons for using multiple choice over, say short answer questions. Sometimes the speaker was a bit fast but this was remedied with the mp3 recordings (which I found to be a valuable tool). • Dr. Latto did a great job in teaching this class. He always provided memorable and interesting examples to concepts and he was enthusiastic about the material. Latto is an awesome lecturer and made the class worth while to attend. • He is very well organized because he gives his students prepared outlines. However, sometimes he jumps from topic to topic so it is a little difficult to organize my notes. Overall, his lectures are relatively clear. • Very well enthusiastic and kept lecture interesting, however, power point may have been a disadvantage because it was easier to get distracted. Teaching effectiveness was great! Love the accent and his “anywho’s”. • Good times. • Power point presentation is ineffective, boring. Simply saying what’s on the screen. Consider chalkboard use. Examples are long winded, not helpful, time consuming. Consider borrowing and/or modifying Campbell textbook examples = clear and concise. Lighting is very bad – turn them on! Thanks for having audio mp3’s helpful. • Drew is effective at helping one understand the material. More “inturmation” comes alive. • Some of the questions on test were confusing. Latto included interesting slides on his lecture presentations. Good professor overall. • Very humorous, engaging, enthusiastic. Connects material to real world. Excellent speaker. Speaks at good pace – not too fast or slow, putting in pauses appropriately to allow students to take notes. • Animated and interesting lectures, made it feel like he was just talking to a few students. • Very friendly and approachable, has a unique style of teaching. Put lecture audio file online, which was a great idea. • Very engaging and humorous instructor. Best course taken to date (2 years). Some materials may be different with textbook. Some material conflict with GSI. I hate the group lab. Group work is light on the GSI but hard on the students due to uneven work distribution (inevitable). • I enjoyed Latto’s enthusiasm. I would take classes from him again. • Found tests choice questions somewhat confusing. • Latto was one of the most informative and passionate professors I have had. His teaching style is effective and engaging. I would enjoy to take another course by Professor Latto. • Although he is a fair professor, his pace is not sensitive, to those who haven’t taken the class. • It would help if the instructor was more smooth in the transitions and explanation. • The class was great but I think the lecture was more interesting in the beginning of the semester. • Professor Latto is my favorite instructor for a summer course – clearly passionate about the subject; a very good lecturer. • Some important concepts were not satisfactorily explained. But Professor Latto made lectures interesting. • John Latto is an interesting fellow with a knack for biology. I enjoyed his ecology and evolution sections, but I feel he was lacking in the plant section. The course was almost perfect until the 3 plant section. There was an overload of reading and the lectures were too slow some days and too fast on others. Overall, great course. • Professor seems to know his stuff, but lectures are sometimes long and boring. Overall, insightful lectures and clear explanations. • Strengths: he keeps the class interesting. I learn a lot from his lectures. He really is an interesting instructor. I like the way he makes things so clear. Weaknesses: ----- • The idea of power point is great, because you can get to see many different pictures, figures like graphs, tables easily. However, power point also tends to make people easily fall asleep, and really hard to take notes for people who are not audio learner. • Latto is very funny and enthusiastic. His only fault – probably due to the shorten of the summer semester – is that he rushes over some material. But his lectures were interesting, organized, and informative, and you can tell he put a lot of effort in this course. • Fair tests, interesting lectures even though material isn’t terribly exciting. • Strengths: very thorough instructions, very detailed. Nice updates on the newest discoveries in biology and its application to the bigger picture (how it affects humans). Weaknesses: instruction is too slow for material already covered in the text. • Hard to see when diagrams or anything is written on the chalk boards. Generally he did a good job presenting the material in an interesting manner. Enjoyed having this class. • John Latto is great! Very enthusiastic and interesting lectures. Regarding labs, I simply don’t understand why an 85% average must be maintained. Students should be able to keep the grades they received. • Professor Latto provided the class with much information on the subject matter. For every section of the course, he presented the material with much enthusiasm, which is always greatly appreciated. • Good lecturer; professor was interested in subject which allowed enthusiasm in students as well. Tests… I don’t like how it tested whether you were a good test taker or not… so it took longer to complete test than expected. • The course information is really exciting I like the idea that Professor Latto included humor and outside story to make the lesson interesting. This made it easier to understand the material. What I don’t like is that on the midterms there are the “nots” as in, which of these answer is not correct, instead of directly phrasing a question. • I enjoyed coming to lecture and looked forward to it. It was the highlight of my day! I loved how we were provided with outlines – they came in handy during lecture – in terms of organizing my notes. Dr. Latto is an awesome lecturer who really knows his stuff. I felt honored to have been able to take a class with him. • I liked this class. • Did a lot to help students. • The audio lecture is a GREAT idea. Its very considerate and helpful!
