Large Garage Destroyed by Fire
City of Madison firefighters were summoned to a garage fire on the city’s east side this morning. As fire units left their stations, they could see black smoke rising into the sky. Within two minutes the first units arrived to find flames burning through the roof of an 8-stall garage. Hoses were pulled to immediately protect a nearby 8-stall garage and an occupied apartment building that were both threatened by the flames. Firefighters helped evacuate some residents and pets who were still in the apartment building. The fire was brought under control and units remained on the scene to extinguish some spot fires. The fire cause is under investigation. One firefighter was injured battling the fire and transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
