I am happy to learn that yet another batch of students of Master’s degree in
Hospital Management are completing their internship and are ready to be placed.
Fourteen long, eventful years and over 450 promising young dynamic manager’s
contribution to health care services across the globe in their own special way
is not all this institute is about.
We are witnessing a rapid expansion of global networks on one hand and
shrinking of time and distance on the other. In this era of dynamic changes, we
need a cadre of young and dynamic hospital and health care professionals,
confident and skilled to steer the nation towards a healthy and promising future.
Health care industry is set for rapid growth. Its importance in terms of provider
of employment and contribution to GDP is well recognized. The present
estimated health care market is of a magnitude of Rs.83, OOO crores and
bound to rise further as India becomes one of the important global health care
destinations. To the success of any hospital it is not only its modern equipment,
technology and infrastructure that are vital, but also it’s dedicated team of
professionals. It is the people who make all the difference. I am proud that this
Institute has contributed immensely to the team of professionals in the form of
distinctly qualified, young managers. I am sure that with the great potential that
they have and zeal these young professionals will make a significant difference
to the health care delivery system.

In view of the current status of health care delivery system, the private sector
has emerged as the major provider of health care in India. Consequently there
emerges a serious need for professionally trained health care professionals
to meet the needs of the health care market.
The graduates of Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration are a special group
of professionals. They are amongst the best and the brightest in India. Our
graduates were selected on the basis of merit from national competition. They
underwent the most intensively designed curriculum in hospital management.
Students are taught by well qualified faculty and are trained in the best hospitals
for their six-month internship.
I am proud of the graduating batch for their achievements. I am confident that
our graduates will rise up to their employer’s expectations and are worthy of
grooming for progressively responsible leadership positions. I wish the XIIV

It is with a sense of satisfaction I mention that the successive batches of
students that have been trained by the institute are well received by the industry
and are able to make a valuable contribution to the health care sector. These
young graduates have Immense potential in them. With their zeal, dynamism
and innovative approach they can be expected to pave the way for path
breaking developments.
Over five semesters of the Master’s program the students have been provided
with a sound theoretical base and conceptual clarity in all diverse subject
areas that go into making a successful Hospital Administrator. Equal importance
was given by way of practical exposure to the real life situation as the institute
is located and attached to the Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. This has enabled
students to be well trained and equipped with problem solving capabilities.
Emphasis was also laid on all round development of students instilling in them
a sense of responsibility and commitment for those future positions in the
world of corporate hospitals and health care industries demand of them. No
amount of class room teaching however effectively taught and no curriculum
however well designed will ever impart all that is required to know about the
health care. Hence the students have to continuously strive to update
themselves with latest developments in health care industry.

The challenges being faced by the present day health care industry are
continuous and unique. The constituencies which have a direct interest in the
performance of hospitals and health care related services are demanding the
best care at the least cost. In order to meet the growing demands of the
increasingly sophisticated individuals and groups, the health care educational
enterprises must train its graduates to be good listeners, compassionate
professionals fiscally responsible administrators. They should also be
professionally trained, proactive, and have the ability to see beyond the
immediate.
Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration since its start in 1994 has graduated
over 450 students in 14 batches who have demonstrated their value to the
employers. Similar to their seniors, the present graduating class is superbly
prepared to be an asset to their organization, community, nation and the world.
The continuing success of the proud holders of Master’s in Hospital
Management degree is also due to the fact that they have been trained
in the Apollo’s tradition of excellence.
Furthermore, having been selected from national competition, the graduates
represent the best. Even though the graduating class joined the Apollo Institute
of Hospital Administration with diverse academic, professional, and regional
background, they are leaving with the single mission to add value to their

The joy and sense of fulfillment on seeing one’s student growing to be capable
of accepting professional challenges is the ultimate. As the 14th batch of
students graduate this academic year, we will be experiencing that joy all
over. The mission of Apollo Hospitals Group since the inception of the first
hospital over two decades ago is to deliver quality health care within the reach
of every individual.
There has been a paradigm shift in determining the quality of patient care
provided at a hospital. It is neither the architecture of the hospital building nor
the number of tests and procedures the patient has to undergo which
determines whether the hospital is good or bad. It is the positive experience
and outcome that counts - the patient’s health.
The graduates of Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration are trained in the
Apollo tradition of consummate excellence of the highest standards. The
graduates are trained to practice innovative thinking and have the demonstrated
ability to meet the demands of the health care consumers.
Following the path laid by the previous batches, the present group is well
equipped to orchestrate the provision of premier quality of patient care, thrive

vital sector, AIHA was established in the year 1994.

forging a synergetic relationship with Healthcare institutions, emerging as an outstanding school of learning.
MASTER’S DEGREE IN HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT
The MHM programme is highly practical oriented catering to the needs of various specialized fields of
healthcare, which is different from the general management programs. The students go through a rigorous
and continuous evaluation system, which demands high degree of commitment in terms of regularity,
punctuality and teamwork. Right from the day one, the students stand exposed to the hospital environment.
Location and attachment of the institute to the Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad facilitates this advantage.
The programme spans a period of five semesters, of which four semesters are of classroom instruction and
hospital practical and the fifth semester is devoted entirely to hospital internship anywhere in India and
abroad.
A student of Master’s Degree in hospital Management undergoes 25 courses apart from the various project
assignments taken up during the study period with emphasis on comprehension, competence building,
information and data analysis, criteria building, evaluation and problem solving with integrative outlook.
Both written and oral communication skills are reinforced through Journal club and Book club sessions,
which are conducted as part of the regular course curriculum.
THE PARADIGM
The institute uses various pedagogical tools such as Lectures, Case studies, Role-plays, Project assignments,
presentations, and weekly seminars from practicing managers in order to facilitate comprehensive and
effective
learning.
Highlights of the programme are;
• Focus on integrated and holistic approach to decision-making and problem solving.
• Emphasis on group work and team building Rigorous teaching and continuous evaluation
• Emphasis on extra and co-curricular activities Faculty and student collaborative projects
• Institute-Industry interface
The regular interface with the practical environment is ensured through:
1. Hospital visits: As the students come from diverse backgrounds without the knowledge of hospital
organization, and dynamics of a hospital environment, students are initially taken on a familiarization
visit to Apollo Hospital. This is followed by field visits to different hospitals selected on the basis of
specialty and ownership, during which they are made to understand the functions of the various
departments and interact with the heads of the departments. The students at the end of the semester
make presentations on their observational study and submit reports, which are evaluated for 50
marks.
2. Know your Hospital (KYH): Constitutes an important component of the second semester curriculum,
designed to ensure that the students learn in detail about the structural and functional aspects of the
hospital. It includes over viewing the functioning of each department as a subsystem of the hospital
and its interaction and inter-relationship with the other subsystems and external entities. The thrust
areas include study of departmental activities and their documentation, skills and knowledge
requirements of the personnel performance, performance appraisal, training and development needs,
criticalities faced and suggestions for improvement. At the end of the KYH programme the students
are required to write reports and present seminars, during which the various HODs from the hospital

are present. This is evaluated for 100 marks by a panel of examiners, including the Head of the

departments of the hospitals.
3. Hospital Study Tour: With a view to expose students to the outside hospitals, they are taken on a
hospital study tour to different states during the third semester. On return the students present seminars
on the study tour. The exposure to different hospital practices and culture has been found to be highly
beneficial.
4. Internship: The fifth semester is entirely devoted to internship in leading hospitals in India and abroad.
The objective of the internship is to help students learn hospital administration in its totality. During this
period, the students are encouraged to administer departments and function independently wherever
possible, under the guidance of the host administrator. The student is also required to do an in-depth
study of any hospital function, identify problem areas, suggest suitable measures and prepare an
analytical report. Unique feature about the internship is that, it is the host administrator who evaluates
the performance of the intern bimonthly on various parameters like understanding the mission,
objectives, Culture of the hospital; understanding of the various medical and non-medical functions,
interdepartmental relationships; problem identification and analysis; interpersonal relationships, team
working etc.
CONTINOUS EVALUATION:
The institute practices a system of continuous evaluation and feedbacks. Students are required to be regular
and involved as series of internal examinations, assignments, project works, presentations, panel discussion
constitute the predominant method of evaluation.
ADMISSION PROCEDURE:
Admission to the Master’s Degree program is on the basis of merit and norms of the university through
rigorous and objective selection process, which includes written test, group discussion and personal interview
conducted by the convener, Osmania University.
INDUCTION AND SOCIALISATION:
After the arrival at the institute, the students go through an induction and socialization process. This process
involves interaction with the faculty, core group members of the Apollo family at Hyderabad and senior
students through briefing sessions. The mission of the institute and Apollo Group and institutional values
are emphasized.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
The institute attaches importance to student activities and encourage creative talent through student
committees. These committees take up several activities, extra and co-curricular programs, which help to
bring out the latent talents of the students. Students play a leading role in organizing management meets;
they also actively participate in all India conferences, seminars and various meets organized by Apollo
Hospitals and other professional bodies.
LIBRARY AND COMPUTER INFRASTRUCTURE:
The library and computing infrastructure at the institute provide excellent informal resources and computing
facilities to the students. These facilities are extensively made use of by the students and faculty members
for academic, research and training purposes.
The library houses a growing collection of books and periodicals, including the latest publications in
management and health related subjects. The library subscribes to over 28 national and international
periodicals. In addition, the library has a good collection of statistical data sources, project reports and
dissertations of previous batches. An audiovisual corner in the library has a varied collection of audio and
video cassettes on management areas.
The institute has a main computer center and has LAN connecting students nd the faculty members. The
NT server (Pentium) supports over 45 terminals including the stand-alone systems. Besides the computer
hardware facilities, the infrastructure includes a good collection of latest software packages.

Interface with Hospitals:

Over the years the institute has succeeded in forging a strong Institute Industry interface. Continuous
interaction with the hospital during the entire period of the curriculum provide the required inputs, the way
the organizations work and understand the various functions and processes that are involved in delivery of
