*Healing...God heals! & He also withholds healing too!
We can look to the Lord for healing. Sometimes God heals through medicine, sometimes He
heals through surgery, sometimes He heals through natural processes working in the body. He
may intervene supernaturally and heal someone because it is His will, so we can cry out to God
in our sickness and ask for His healing. Today what we see is a shame & a sham!
Dr. William Nolan decided that he would look into the healing ministry Kathryn Kuhlman (before her
death). And he wrote a book after studying her, called "Healing, A Doctor In Search Of a Miracle."
Nolan wrote, Search the literature as I have and you will find no documented cures, by healers, of gall
stones, heart disease, cancer, or any other serious organic disease. Certainly you will find patients
temporarily relieved of their upset stomach, their chest pain, their breathing problems. You will find
healers and believers who will interpret this interruption of symptoms as evidence that the disease is
cured. But when you track the patient down and find out what happened later you will always find the
cure to have been purely symptomatic and transient. The underlying disease remains.
Modern faith healers operate in the realm of Functional disease where perfectly good organ does not
function properly, not in the area of organic disease where the organ is diseased, maimed, physically
impaired, or even defunct (ex. Infections, heart attacks, cancers, broken bones, congenital deformities, &
lacerations).. . Or often in the psychogenic...thinking your arm was sore. (Misdiagnosis)
Where are the healings of the terminally ill? Amputees? Quadriplegics? Disfigured? INSTEAD WE SEE
OFTEN SEE IMAGINARY ILLNESSES IMAGINARILY HEALED.
How about healing something I can see? Ex. walkers, casts, crutches - no tombstones!
*Phil Keaggy concert – “Everybody was saved and the blind could see...” REALLY???
How did Jesus heal?
1. Jesus healed with a word or a touch. That's all it took. 2. HE healed instantaneously. 3. HE healed
totally. He didn't partially heal. He healed totally. 4. HE healed anybody. No waiting a long line filling
out cards. No leftovers in wheelchairs.AWhen the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all
who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.@ Luke 4:40
5. HE healed organic disease. He didn't just go around healing lower back pain! 6. HE raised the
dead. NOT what we see today!!! (Partial – gradual – temporary)
1 Peter 2:22-25: 22"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." 23When they hurled their insults at
him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges
justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for
righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have
returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
What’s the meaning of “healed”?
o Context... (No mention of physical healing anywhere in the surrounding verses)
He BORE OUR SINS not our sickness.
o Grammar... “have been healed” = past tense...points back to the cross.
o Other Scripture... Rom. 8:23: Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
groan inwardly as we eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
= JESUS HEALS US OF OUR SIN SICKNESS!
Today God may heal in answer to prayer according to His sovereign will, but He is not obligated to heal.
MacArthur: Charismatics often respond to biblical and theological reasoning by appealing to
experience. They plead, “But incredible things are happening; how do you explain it?” I hear
the same refrain constantly from charismatic friends: “I know this lady whose son had cancer
and...” “My friend’s mother was so bent over with arthritis she couldn’t move and...” In reply I
say: “Since no charismatic healer can come up with genuinely verifiable cases of instant healing
involving organic disease; since no charismatic healer heals everyone who comes for healing
and hundreds go away from their services as sick or as crippled as when they came; since no
charismatic healer raises the dead; since the Word of God needs no confirmation outside itself
and is sufficient to show the way of salvation; since... ...charismatic healings are based on
questionable theology of the atonement and salvation; since charismatic writers and teachers
appear to disallow God his own purposes in allowing people to be sick; since charismatic healers
seem to need their own special environment; since the evidence they bring forth to prove
healings is often weak, unsupported, and over-exaggerated; since charismatics are not know
for going into hospitals to heal though there are plenty of faithful people in hospitals; since
most instances of healings by charismatics can be explained in ways other than God’s
unquestioned supernatural intervention; since charismatics get sick and die like
everyone......else; since so much confusion and contradiction surrounds what is happening---let
me ask the return question: How do you explain it? It certainly is not the biblical gift of
*Tongues… “Supernaturally-acquired human languages”
“Glossa” – Athe language used by a particular people.@ All we see is gibberish!
Look at the 1st mention in the NT:
Acts 2:1-11: 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the
blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what
seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-
fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment,
because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men
who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians,
Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia,
Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and
Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
Paul's church-historian & traveling companion Luke certainly depicts tongues as spoken (not
merely heard) known human languages. Luke, was well-travelled throughout the churches, he
knew Paul's teaching well, and he repeatedly used the same word that Paul used (glossa) to
describe the gift (Acts 2:4, 11; 10:46; 19:6; cf. 1 Corinthians 12:10, 28; 13:8; 14:2, 4, 6, 9, 13, 14,
18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 39). Glossa is never used in Greek literature to mean babble, or gibberish.
*Paul expressly says that by "tongues" he means intelligible human speech,
specifically in a foreign Gentile tongue. Where? Here: 1 Corinthians 14:21-22: In the Law it is written,
"By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not
listen to me, says the Lord." Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a
sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
Paul is citing Isaiah 28:11-12, which refers to Gentile tongues, heard as a sign of God's judgment of
the nation of Israel (cf. 14:22). The "tongues" are human, foreign, gentile languages.
William Samarin (professor of linguistics at the University of Toronto): Over a period of five years, I have
taken part of meetings in Italy, Holland, Jamaica, Canada, and the United States. I have observed old fashioned
Pentecostals and neo-Pentecostals (or Charismatics). I have been in small meetings in private homes as well as in
mammoth public meetings. I have seen such different cultural settings as are found among Puerto Ricans of the
Bronx, the Snake Handlers of the Appalachians, and the Russian Molikhans of Los Angeles. I have interviewed
tongue speakers and tape recorded and analyzed countless samples of tongues. In every case, "glossolalia" turns
out to be linguistic nonsense. In spite of superficial similarities, "glossolalia" is fundamentally not language!
Suppose you say, "Oh, look! A cat!" And you point to a snake. So I go get a textbook that we
both respect, and I read, "Cat: mammal, possessed of four legs, a tail, a head, lots of fur, and an
insatiable appetite. Purrs when petted." Then I say, "That thing you're pointing at doesn't look
anything like a cat." But you say, "Yeah, but maybe it's a furless, legless, reptilian cat who never
purrs! Or maybe one day it will be a cat!”
Similarly, anyone who babbles and calls it tongues is in opposition to every Biblical description of the
real, legitimate phenomena. No such widespread, well-documented phenomena as described in the
Bible has ever characterized Biblical Christianity, from the early church to the present day.
*Well . . . in the mission fields . . . U.S. . . . 100+ languages in our big cities!

A word about 1 Corinthians 12-14 (More charismatic mishandling of the test....)
Let’s look at a few debated passages.↓
1 Cor. 13:8-13: Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will
be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when
perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I
reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a
mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now
these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
CONTEXT: contrast between temporary and permanent... AND Paul inserts parenthetically
a secondary contrast between partial knowledge & “the perfect.”
“Perfect”- teleion...perfection? “COMPLETE” (Contrasted with partial revealed knowledge)
Neuter gender = not Jesus; it’s the perfect/complete thing...partial...complete...the BIBLE!
The teleion will come and the partial gifts will cease while faith, hope and love remain...
BTW, God’s will & word are described with the same Greek word in Rom. 12:2; James 1:25 & Heb. 5:14-6:1
Staton: In 1st century “look into a mirror” was used to refer to partial knowledge! (Philo)
1 Cor. 13:12a (NKJV): For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.
Num. 12:8a (NKJV): I speak with him face to face, Even plainly, and not in dark sayings.
=For Moses & Paul the point is a contrast between less clear & more clear revelation. (James & “mirror”)
Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. CONTEXT: not God not omniscience - Revelation!
Also, history supports this. After the NT was finished and the scriptures were being circulated
and the church was moving out of its infancy stage – we longer find recordings in the early
church practicing miraculous gifts...with the exception, ironically, of some heretical groups.
So how is it explained that “tongues” today doesn’t live up to the Biblical description of tongues as
supernaturally-acquired human languages? One dodge is, "Well, it's an angelic language!” It's clever; it's
creative and it even as a “proof” text: 1 Corinthians 13:1. However it collapses under biblical scrutiny…
1 Corinthians 13:1-3: If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding
gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have
a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my
body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. HYPERBOLE! (“if...but...”)
WHY does the false teaching surrounding the charismatic movement persist?
A desire for experience + biblical ignorance + easy access to false teaching = disaster!
People are doing something in the name of Holy Spirit...
Ignorance: deluded/duped/deceived – Emotion/looking experience - Peer pressure –
