Accelerated BSN Partnership Program began on June 9th
Forty-eight students began classes in our Accelerated BSN Partnership Program for College Graduates. These students will have their tuition entirely covered by either Carondelet or University Medical Center. After they graduate on August 12, 2004, they will be committed to work for one of the two health care organizations for two years. University Medical Center will hire 24 of the students and Carondelet Health Network will hire the other 24 students. This new program is a win-win situation in which all the collaborators and the Southern Arizona community will benefit. The health care partners will address workforce shortages by investing in their employees of the future, and students will have the opportunity to prepare (tuition-free) for their careers as professional nurses in a fast-track BSN program specifically designed for college graduates. Here are some student demographics: there are 42 (88%) females and six (12%) male students in the program. Thirty-nine (81%) are resident students and nine (19%) non-resident students. Thirty five (73%) students have a BS degree and 13 (27%) have a BA degree. Twentyone (44%) students received a BS or BA degree from the University of Arizona. Since announcing this new accelerated program last year, the UA nursing college has been inundated with inquiries from potential students around the country. The college receives 12 to 18 inquiries a day. Informational meetings draw about 30 people to each meeting. The college will soon gear up for the next program that starts in June 2004.

College of Nursing to Participate in Study with San Diego-Based Sharp HealthCare
The University of Arizona College of Nursing will participate in a study with San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare to determine the impact of hospital computerized order-entry systems on adverse drug events. Adverse drug events (ADEs) are widely recognized as the most common type of iatrogenic injury occurring in hospitalized patients. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Quality & Research (AHRQ) awarded a $1.3 million dollar grant for the three-year study. Rita Snyder-Halpern, PhD, RN, CNAA, BC, Associate Professor, and health care informatics specialist, is the principal investigator; co-investigators are Willa Fields, DNSc, RN, Sharp HealthCare Vice President for Patient

Care Information Systems, and Al Rizos, PharmD, Sharp HealthCare System Senior Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and medication safety expert. Study consultants include: Brigham and Women’s Hospital adverse drug event and medication safety experts David W. Bates, MD, MS; Jeffrey Rothschild, MD, MPH; and Diane Seger, BS, RPh; Sharp HealthCare System Medical Director Rick LeMoine, MD; and UA College of Nursing measurement and statistics expert Joyce A. Verran, PhD, RN, FAAN, Division Director of Nursing Systems and Professor. Significantly, this three-year study is the first of its kind in non-teaching community hospitals, and will coincide with implementation of a commercial CPOE system in three Sharp HealthCare

community hospitals. Factors commonly associated with CPOE system implementation and the impact of the CPOE system on ADE outcomes will be studied. The study provides an invaluable opportunity to learn more about CPOE system implementation processes and impacts in community hospitals. It also will provide important information about “unique-versuscommon” responses to the same CPOE system across three different hospitals within the same health care system. Important information will also be gained about ADE detection and investigational procedures that potentially could be generalized to other community hospitals. This information will be vital to supporting efforts by community hospitals to establish safer medication practice environments.

Welcome to New Faculty
d Linda L. Chapman, DNSc, RN, Clinical Associate Professor, came to us from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, California, where she was a Professor. Dr. Chapman’s area of expertise is maternal newborn nursing; her area of research is expectant fathers during labor and birth and on couple’s experience with epidural labor. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Chapman is a Level I Coordinator for the Second Career Community Partnership Program. d Maria Carmen Eribes, PhD, RN, Clinical Associate Professor, came to us from Grand Valley State University, Kirkhof School of Nursing, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she was an Associate Professor. Dr. Eribes’ area of expertise is in the area of Community Health Nursing and inpatient care. She will be teaching in the Second Career Community Partnership Program. d Cheryl D. McNiece, PhD, RN, Clinical Assistant Professor, came to us from the University Medical Center, here in Tucson, where she was a Staff Nurse, Charge Nurse, Preceptor, Case Manager, Technical Instructor, Nurse Educator and Pain Liaison. Dr. McNiece’s area of expertise is in the area of Acute Care Nursing and mental health care. She will be teaching in the Second Career Community Partnership Program. d Ted Rigney, MS, RN, ACNP, Clinical Assistant Professor, came to us from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program, where he was an Assistant Clinical Professor. He also held an ancillary position at San Francisco General Hospital, San Francisco Trauma Program, where he was an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. He is teaching in the Second Career Community Partnership Program during the summer, and will be teaching in the generic undergraduate and nurse practitioner programs during the academic year. d Nita M. Slater, MSN, RN, Clinical Instructor, came to us from Long Beach City College where she was on faculty. Ms. Slater was the Staff Development Coordinator at Desert Life Rehabilitation and Care Center in Tucson prior to joining our faculty. Ms. Slater has extensive clinical and teaching expertise in a variety of areas, including parent/child nursing. She will be teaching in the Second Career Community Partnership Program. d Nora E. Webster, MSN, RN, CNM, Clinical Assistant Professor, came to us from the Monroe Clinic in Monroe, Wisconsin, where she was a Certified Nurse-Midwife. Ms. Webster’s previous experience in Arizona was at the Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, United States Public Health Service/Indian Health Service. Ms. Webster will be joining the faculty in August, 2003, and will be teaching in the Second Career Community Partnership Program. d Elaine C. Wozniak, MS, GNP, Clinical Assistant Professor, came to us from the Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she was a Case Manager/Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Wozniak’s area of expertise is in Gerontology (GNP). She will be teaching in the Second Career Community Partnership Program.

International Health Conference
Are you working in an underserved community? Has Global Health been a part of your past – would you like it to be part of your future? Historic challenges of infectious disease, clean water and sanitation, maternal and child health are magnified as we are faced with decreased resources, increased populations, conflict, war and displaced people. The International Health: Clinical and Community Care Reunion Conference, to be held July 23-27, 2003 in Tucson AZ, will bring together l i k e - m i n d e d h e a l t h c a r e professionals committed to working with marginalized and underserved populations both at home and abroad. CE Activities
The College of Nursing and the Arizona Telemedicine Program present Nursing Grand Rounds on the second Tuesday each month from 12:00 to 1:00 PM in AHSC Room 3230. On July 8, Shu-Fen Wung, PhD, MS, RN, Associate Professor, will present on Cardiovascular Assessment. All faculty and nursing students are invited to attend. Welcome to New Staff
d Liz Gradillas is the Business Manager in the Finance and Administration Office, and will be providing accounting and financial management support for the College. She brings 15 years of accounting experience with the University, most recently in the Cancer Center and prior to that, in the College of Agriculture. d Cristina Roman is the Program Coordinator for the Accelerated BSN Partnership Program. Her professional background is in the area of prevention and outreach with an emphasis on at-risk youth. In addition, she has school-based and community-based programming experience with grant related projects in rural and border regions. d Dianne Thomas is the Office Specialist Senior in the Office of Student Affairs. She is originally from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. She worked for 10 years in the Registrar’s Office at East Stroudsburg University. She moved to Tucson in May 2001 to be near her family. She worked for two years in Curriculum and Registration here at the University of Arizona.

American Academy of Nursing
Carrie Merkle, PhD, RN, Associate Professor, was selected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. The induction ceremony will be held November 15, 2003, in San Diego, California.

End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium
Sharon Ewing, PhD, RN, FNP, Clinical Assistant Professor, recently attended a three-day course on end-of-life care held in Pasadena, California. The City of Hope (COH) Cancer Center and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) received a 4-year grant from the National Cancer Institute to conduct this training program. This program, titled “End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium – Graduate Curriculum,” is for nurses who provide education for graduate nursing students. This project is led by Betty R. Ferrell, RN, PhD, FAAN (COH) as the principal investigator. Dr. Ewing was one of 60 participants competitively selected from across the United States to attend this training program. The principal goal of the training program is to provide information on end-of-life care and resources to integrate end-of-life content into their graduate nursing program.
