RFID – Radio Frequency Identification
• General term for technologies, which use radio waves for objects identification. • There are several methods of identification, the most popular is to keep the series number, which identifies the object when necessary, additional information in microchip,which is connected with the aerial (chip and aerial together are called RFID transponder, RFID-mark or RFID-tag). • The aerial allows the chip to transmit the identification information to reader. • The reader converts the radio waves, reflected from RFID-tag, into digital information for computer

Architectyure of RFID systems
• The equipment for RFID system includes tags and readers. • There are two main types of tags, passive and active. • The system of wagon identification is usually based on the tags, fixed to the wagons and reading/recording appliances, fixes on the rail tracks or near them. The information can be read and recorded when moving. • Modern tags provide possibility to read/record information in high speed of wagon movement,high speed of information transmission and memory size, possibility of safe programming безопасного программирования “on-the-fly”.

Possibility to submit the request about wagon location : • on special web-sites (chargeable and free services ) • With the help of railway staff (via telephone, e-mail etc
Main condition – approach to the information may be provided to the
participant of transport process only (consignor , consignee, freight forwarder) and only about “own” wagons.

A. Systems of informational exchange between railways
ISR International Service Reliability New initiative of European railways for collection and exchange of information about movement of loaded and empty wagons in international connection. The system is now in development. No direct approach for customers. USE-IT Uniform System for European Intermodal Tracking and tracing USE-IT Applications are not the new informational system, but allow to use the existing railways systems. It allows tracing of container trains only.
B. Systems for collection of railways information
ESY ELOG’s ESY Monitoring – this program product is based on web-technologies, used for wagons tracing in international traffic; it provides 24-hour to the information about wagons and allows to trace wagons all over Europe, due to the export of files from the existing national railway systems or other external positioning systems, such as GPS, GSM or RFI, in different formats (XML, electronic tables, text files etc). It allows tracing of specified groups of wagons, useful for large carriers.

• Depends much on carrier’s monopolyзависимость от монополии перевозчика • Neither carrier nor infrastructure manager are obliged to provide information about train and wagon location to the customer • The whole European network covered not totally • It is impossible to receive full information about wagon location on the whole network from only one system • Different forma and formats of requests and answers in different systems, the received information is not always suitable for further handling • Some systems are closed for customers • High prices
