This catalog provides descriptions of and information about jobs with the City of Desert Park. It provides information on entry-level clerical and administrative jobs, focusing on occupations that require a high school diploma or some college level courses and knowledge of commonly used business computer applications. In this guide, business information technology is used to describe occupations that use computer applications to work with information and to solve business problems. These are clerical and administrative support jobs that exist in every department of the City. Today, nearly every job in an office requires the use of a computer. Data entry clerks enter information into computers using database programs. Clerk typists spend much of their day using word processing programs. File clerks use computers to keep track of paper files. Accounting clerks work with spreadsheets. Administrative assistants use word processing, spreadsheet, email and presentation programs. Shipping and receiving clerks use computers to track inventory. It is important for people who do all of these jobs to have the computer skills needed to get a job and to advance within the City. Clerical and administrative support occupations have traditionally been major entry points for individuals, especially women, who are coming into the workforce for the first time. Even though many other opportunities have opened for women in the past 25 years, women still hold the vast majority of clerical and administrative support positions. There are a huge number of clerical and administrative support job openings each year in Desert Park and in the state of Arizona. More than 174,000 job openings in these occupations will occur in the state between 1999 and 2006. This offers many opportunities for starting on a career path that can lead in many directions. Most clerical and administrative support positions are entry-level jobs that require only a high school diploma with no additional training or experience. They tend to be lower paying jobs, but many offer good opportunities for advancement for employees who have good skills and show initiative and a willingness to learn.
