TREK OVERVIEW Although this is our shortest expedition we have included extra days for the ascent of Kilimanjaro both to improve your enjoyment through acclimatisation and also for your safety. We spend 7 days on the ascent, check this out very few other companies offer this extra level of altitude safety! It adds a small cost, but helps retain our success levels of 99.9% for clients to the actual summit of Kilimanjaro. Flights are to Kilimanjaro airport avoiding the journey to and from Nairobi. We offer two original

additions to the normal shorter standard routes, the: Rongai+, perhaps the easiest and most remote of all the routes. Although longer it has a gentle gradient and shorter daily stages linked with a rest and acclimatisation day at the idyllic Mawenzi Tarn, beneath dramatic rock spires. This gives 7 days walking. Machame+ variation, we extend the normal route by adding an extra camp in the Karanga Valley (4200m) to our itinerary, again giving 7 days walking.

OUTLINE ITINERARY KEY to inclusions (H-hotel, C-Camping, B-breakfast, L-lunch, D-dinner/evening meal) Itinerary Day 1 Flight is normally from London to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Please meet at the check-in desk 3 hours prior to your flight time. Arrive in Tanzania and transfer to the Keys Hotel, Moshi. Situated in a quiet location in the foothills of Kilimanjaro this is a pleasant and friendly hotel with restaurant, bar and swimming pool. (H,B) Day 2 - A leisurely start to allow you to make any adjustments to your packing before leaving for the park gate. Machame Gate to the Machame Camp Distance climbed 1350 metres, Time: 4-5 hours. From the Gate (1950 metres) the path climbs with a gradual gradient and a never tiring route in a forest full of flowers. A last ramp leads to the lovely rocky rise and metal constructions of the Machame Hut (3,300m). The huts tend to be run down; we make good use of our quality mountain tents close by. (C,B,L,D)

reaching an enormous solitary rock and then proceed on wide, desolate, stony slopes towards the Lava Tower and the Arrow Glacier Hut. High up, in the distance are the walls of the Western Breach. Once at the ridge at the base of the Lava Tower (4,400 meters) a rather steep descent leads to the Barranco Hut (3,950 meters), a splendid viewpoint of the Breach Wall and the Heim and Decken glaciers. (C,B,L,D) Day 5 - Barranco Hut to Karanga Valley Distance climbed: 400 metres Distance descended: 200metres Time: 3 hours. A short but spectacular day which gives an ever changing vista of the summit. You start by crossing the valley and scrambling up the Barranco wall by a series of easy rock ledges. Once at the top a broad, rocky ridge traverses around the mountain with wonderful views of the Heim glacier. A short sharp descent past some amazing rock formations leads down into the Karanga Valley and the final climb to your campsite. (C,B,L,D) Day 6 Karanga Valley to Barafu Hut Distance climbed: 350 metres Time: 3 hours. The final short stretch of the approach climb follows a rocky wind-beaten ridge and crosses a large desolate bowl before climbing up onto the obvious ridge to the Barafu Hut (4,500 metres) and our camp. (C,B,L,D) Day 7 - Barafu Hut to the Uhuru Peak and the Horombo Hut Distance climbed: 1,290 metres Distance descended: 2170metres Time: 10-14 hours. Leaving our camp just after midnight a good path marked by stones climbs the rocky slopes and into the wide gorge to the right of the Rebmann glacier. A section on the more friable ground nothing like the screes of Gillman s Point on the normal route! precedes the last slopes, generally covered with snow. Once out on the crater at Stella Point (5,750 metres) you go left to the Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres). To descend, we drop back to our high camp and then down via a new track to the Horombo hut. (C,B,L,D) Day 8 - Horombo Hut to the Marangu gate Distance descended: 1820 metres Time: 4 hours The new descent route takes you through and down a wonderful forest track to the park gate and a welcome lunchtime beer before your transfer back to the comforts of your hotel. This is a good time to buy souvenirs and try your hand at haggling with the local shopkeepers. (H,B,L) Day 9 & 10 - Return flight from Kilimanjaro Airport to London (H,B)

Day 3 - Machame Camp to the Shira Camp Distance climbed: 500 metres, Distance descended: 100metres, Time: 3-4 hours. A rather short day although the altitude begins to make itself felt. The path rises with a charming route along a lava ridge that offers splendid views of the Kibo and Meru peaks before crossing a number of clearings surrounded by very high, tree-like heathers. A stony stretch with the odd zigzag leads to the edge of the remarkable lava plateau of Shira. We cross this to our camp (3,700 metres) near a large cave. (C,B,L,D) Day 4 - Shira Hut to the Barranco Hut Distance climbed: 700 metres, Distance descended: 450metres, Time: 4-5 hours. This stage, quite tiring at first, explains why hikers starting from Machame suffer the altitude less on the final stage to the Kibo summit. Zigzagging up and down is, on any mountain, the best way to get acclimatised. You start by

that even the carnivores have having been tucking into the vegetarian dishes. ACCOMMODATION The accommodation is a mixture of hotels and camping. We normally use the Key s Hotel in Moshi. The staff are friendly and helpful and it s a popular base for attempting Kilimanjaro. Facilities include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and laundry services. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/FITNESS Grade 1A The ascent is non-technical involving enjoyable walking over a variety of terrain. The Barranco Wall on Kilimanjaro looks impressive but only has a couple of tricky steps. The majority of the trekking consists of rugged walking on well defined paths. Most days are relatively short but the summit involves a long day starting around midnight. Despite the added challenge of the altitude, Kilimanjaro is well within the reach of the majority of regular hill walkers. A TYPICAL TREKKING DAY The Trekking Day starts around 7.00 am (not usually a problem as it s usual to go to bed very early and get an early start whilst it s fairly cool). As you get up it s easy enough to pack all your overnight gear into a kit bag before enjoying a hearty breakfast. Your tents will be packed away for you by the local staff and the porters will arrange their loads and get a head start. The pace on the trek will be leisurely with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos, chat to the locals and keep hydrated. Lunch will normally be served on arrival at your next camp. For the longer days you will be supplied with a simple packed lunch, again a pleasant relaxed affair that will help your acclimatisation program. Most days, you will be arriving at camp early, which will be already set up by the local staff. After tea, biscuits & popcorn this leaves an hour or so to either rest or explore the camp before a fine three course evening meal. It is quite remarkable what the cook team can produce in these remote circumstances. Although it rapidly gets chilly in the evenings it is quite cosy enough to sit around in the mess tent. FOOD Food on the trek is excellent and designed to stimulate your appetite and keep you going despite frequent altitude induced loss of appetite. Breakfast can include porridge followed by sausage & eggs (fried or omelette) and either bread or chapattis with jam, honey, peanut butter etc. A sample lunch may consist of sandwiches, boiled eggs, chicken legs, biscuits, fruit etc. You usually arrive at the camp around lunchtime or mid afternoon for tea, biscuits and fresh popcorn. The evening meal always starts with soup followed by a huge variety of main courses pasta, rice, chips with various sauces. Fresh fruit tends to be served for dessert. You should not be hungry! Vegetarian food is improving rapidly and we ve been getting reports On Kilimanjaro we camp at recognised sites for 6 nights. Facilities are basic with wooden long drop toilets but due to the efforts of the National Park the rubbish that once blighted these sites is nearly gone. Tent accommodation is based on two people to a 3 man dome tent providing plenty of room for your equipment. We also provide a large communal mess tent with table and chairs/stools. LEADERSHIP Our expedition leader is usually a member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI), an International Mountain Leader (IML) or a British Mountain Guide (UIAGM). Alternatively they will have had experience on Mount Kenya and/or Kilimanjaro or similar mountains. The leader will work alongside a team of local guides, assistant guides, porters and cooks who work very hard to make the whole experience as enjoyable as possible.

HEALTH All our leaders hold first aid certificates and carry a fully equipped first aid kit for medical emergencies. However you should bring your own supplies of plasters, blister prevention pads (compede), paracetamol etc. and any medication you are taking. Non spring bottled water should never be drunk without first sterilizing with iodine, chlorine tablets or by boiling. Vaccinations Please take advice from your GP s travel clinic or similar to ensure you have the most up to date information. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is no longer required for entry into Tanzania but is still highly recommended. Please note that if you plan to visit Zanzibar then this is still mandatory. Other recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Polio, Tetanus. Malaria We travel and stay in areas which have a high risk of malaria. Although the majority of the trip is spent above the altitudes where they are present it is still a good

idea to take a prophylaxis. However the best form of protection is not to get bitten by using a repellent and wearing long trousers and sleeves, particularly in the evenings. Ultimately we advise you to consult your GP or a vaccine specialist for professional advice or visit the website www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk INSURANCE Insurance which covers mountain rescue, helicopter evacuation and medical expenses is essential. We recommend Ault Insurance (0121 569 8772) but whatever agent you choose, we will require a copy of your insurance prior to departure. ALTITUDE If this is your first trip to altitude you may have concerns about the effects of altitude. Don t worry, our itineraries allow sufficient time to acclimatize. At worst you may experience a headache or a little breathlessness, the best way to avoid such symptoms is to do everything slowly, walk at a gentle steady pace and drink plenty of fluid. Should you be the exception, we can allow you to stay an extra night at a lower level and follow with one of our local guides. USEFUL TIPS Just in case your main luggage goes missing en route, it is a good idea to wear your boots on the plane. Most other things can be replaced but comfortable, well worn-in boots are more difficult to replace. We suggest you purchase and carry a roll of toilet paper; extra can be bought en route. Rubbish should be disposed of at the end of each day. EQUIPMENT A detailed equipment list is provided on booking. Specialist items such as sleeping bags and down jackets can be hired or purchased with 15% discount from our shop. BAGGAGE For your own comfort, travel light. Please pack carefully as we have to comply with a number of weight restrictions. Our flights usually have a 22kg allowance for checked baggage. Please be advised that you will have to pay any excess baggage costs incurred. On Kilimanjaro our porters are only allowed to carry 15kg plus their own equipment. This is strictly enforced by the National Park. Any spare clothing or kit may be stored securely at the Keys Hotel. A suitable kit bag is provided but important items should also be packed in plastic bags. WHAT TO CARRY This trek is fully supported by a team of porters. You will only need to carry a light daypack at the very most. A 2730L rucksack is a useful size to comfortably fit in essential items such as water bottle, camera, sun cream, wetweather gear and extra layers etc.

VISAS AND PERMITS A Single Entry Tourist Visa costs £38.00 / approx. US$ 80.00. You need to submit the following to the Tanzanian High Commission in London. Details of how to obtain your visa will be sent on booking. LOCAL COSTS Most meals are inclusive, please see the key above. Individuals are responsible for drinks throughout and hotel meals which gives the flexibility to choose where you eat. CURRENCY The currency in Tanzania is the Shilling. Travellers cheques and credit cards can be used in a small number of banks and money changers but can be expensive. The US$ is widely accepted and is probably the easiest way to carry your money. TIPPING Tipping is generally expected and part of everyday life. We generally tip our own local staff as a whole and would recommend around $90 per person for this trip. TIME Tanzania is 3 hours ahead of GMT. There is no daylight saving.

ZANZIBAR EXTENSION Zanzibar is a perfect place to round off your African adventure, with its pristine white beaches and the azure blue Indian Ocean. SAFARI (extend your stay for a 3 day safari) This is a lodge safari with no camping. Lake Manyara Park is a fresh water lake in the Rift Valley part of Tanzania. Animals you may see include hippos, elephants, flamingos, wildebeest, giraffes, baboons and lions. Ngorongoro Crater one of the world s largest craters packed with just about every species of wildlife to be found in East Africa. This is also a favoured place for the local Masai tribes people. Tarangire Park on the course of the Tarangire River where the park fills with zebra, leopards, lions, eland, buffalo, giraffes and elephants.
