If it’s Dance Drama, it must be Christmas!
As traditional as Christmas trees, decorations and cards, Dance Drama 2008 played to packed audiences of over one thousand people over three nights. Over four hundred students and thirty staff took part in a range of dances and drama sketches which reflected not just Christmas but the spirit of friendship.

Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy family Christmas. Mrs McCormack and Staff of South Wirral High School

We were delighted to share our stage with the fantastic performers from Saturday dance and drama clubs, aged 2 - 11, with Raeburn primary school’s maths magic, and our traditional partner in dance, Birkenhead Girls. The littlest performers brought the house down!

Thanks to parents and friends of the school for the fantastic support as audiences.

Mrs McCormack

We have recently had the pleasure of hosting three Ghanaian teachers from a school in Accra, the capital city. The headteacher Mrs Agyemang and two teachers, Mr Nymko and Miss Mensa spent the first week of the half term working with students, delivering lessons and helping to run the Ghana Day with our Year 9’s. Our link with La Yahoushua School is an important one. It gives us the opportunity to develop an ongoing relationship with the staff and students of a school so that we can explore key educational issues like cultural diversity, social justice and interdependence. As a result of the relationship, sixty of our students have been able to correspond with sixty Ghanaian students through a structured pen-pal scheme we call ‘All about me’. A booklet describing life in England and Ghana along with hopes and aspirations has been completed by each student involved. We’re hoping to capture the most memorable quotes for a booklet to be used in some of our subjects. When they were here our visitors taught some year 8 students how to make Chicken Jollof, a wonderful Ghanaian dish. They also taught dance to Year 7,8 and 9 students. Finally they were involved in humanities lessons where they spoke passionately about their country and their way of life. The week ended on a real high when year 9 took part in Ghana day. Four sessions covering Ghanaian art, storytelling, history and industry taught by our staff and the Ghana teachers. Not only did the Year 9’s enjoy the day and learn vital lessons of cultural appreciation and awareness of global issues such as fair trade and social justice, but as teachers working together we were able to develop our skills. The final hour was a question and answer session. It was a real privilege to see our Year 9 students asking such excellent questions of our guests. However, this was bettered by the impromptu dance that Miss Mensa performed on stage at the request of some students. She didn't dance alone as around eight of our students joined in with her. Their willingness to participate in front of 200 of their peers highlights how confident and enthusiastic our students are and how excellent they were with our guests.

Poetry Corner
The winner of the Year 7 SWHS Poetry Competition on ‘The Environment’ is Elizabeth Triggs 7SO with her poem ‘The Environment’. Congratulations on winning £5. Our fields are disappearing, our trees are going fast Our rivers are polluted, were they not meant to last? Please may we find it in our hearts to save our planet earth, Cos there will be no second chance, no thoughts of a rebirth. So when our planets dry and barren, we hang our heads in shame. We know that we have murdered her, she will never be the same, So raise your voices all as one. To stop the rot today. So all our future as mankind, won’t simply blow away!

Runners up were Ellie Davies SQ, Howard Chance and Jenny Barry. The winner of the Year 8 SWHS Poetry Competition on ‘Friendship’ is Callen O’Rourke 8WO with his poem “It doesn't matter if you’re black or white”. Well done on winning £5. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white Am I wrong or am I right? You go to think how we treat each other Like a sister or a brother We’re all the same inside But the outer respect has died Respect God for what he has done He made the world pure and fun It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white And now I know I’m dead on RIGHT!

Runners up were Daniel Reece and Alison Wallace. Well done to everyone who took part. The Year 9 competition for the month of November is Relationships. Hand your poems to Mrs Sutherland in E2 for a chance to win £5.
