New Covenant Church Sunday School Class January 13, 2008 The Essentials of Christianity The basic elements that make up and characterize our faith and separate it from other belief systems.  SCRIPTURE: The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God. It is the ultimate, complete and eternal source of knowledge about God and the definitive guide for our daily lives.  GOD: There is only one God, existing in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is self-existent, eternal, unchanging, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, holy, righteous and loving. God created the universe from nothing and He is the sovereign ruler over His creation.  MAN: Man is a physical and spiritual being (composed of spirit, soul and body), who is created in God’s image. However, because of sin, man has lost his fellowship with God and is destined to die.  GRACE: Grace is the unmerited, undeserved love of God manifested in Jesus Christ. Jesus – who is fully God and fully man – was sent by God the Father to save man from slavery to sin. Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, suffered and died for sins, physically rose from the dead and will one day return to deliver His followers and judge the world. Faith in Jesus Christ is the only means by which mankind can escape judgement and eternal damnation.  CHURCH: The Church is ordained by God, headed by Jesus Christ and composed of all believers from Pentecost to the Rapture. The Church is also referred to as the “Bride” or the “Body” of Christ. Members of the Church organize local churches for worship, for fellowship, for the administration of the sacraments (primarily baptism & the Lord’s supper), for spiritual growth and support, and for evangelizing the world. Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Proverbs 30:6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever. Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: „Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.‟ ” Deuteronomy 8:3 Matthew 5:17-18 [Jesus said:] “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” John 1:1, 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 14:6a Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 17:17 [Jesus said:] “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Ephesians 6:17 Take the…sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 1 Peter 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 1 Peter 2:2-3 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 2 Peter 1:20-21 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. Revelation 22:18-19 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. Deuteronomy 8:3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 2 Samuel 22:31a As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. Psalm 18:30a Psalm 18:22-23 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. Psalm 18:30a As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. Psalm 119:89 Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Proverbs 30:5a Every word of God is flawless; Isaiah 55:11 [And the LORD said:] …my word … goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Daniel 10:21 but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. Luke 4:1-13 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: „Man does not live on bread alone.‟ ” The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered, “It is written: „Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.‟ ” The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: „He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.‟ ” Jesus answered, “It says: „Do not put the Lord your God to the test.‟ ” When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. John 8:31-32 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Acts 1:16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David… Romans 15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Galatians 3:2-5 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing – if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard? Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. Revelation 19:13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. Genesis 3:6-7 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Genesis 17:9-11 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.” Colossians 1:22-23 But now he has reconciled you by Christ‟s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation – if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. Hebrews 9:27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,… 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. Revelation 21:2-4 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Please address any questions/comments concerning these notes to ron price (505-294-4743; pricegang@integrity.com)
