Details as for ‘Below the Floor Slab’ application, with the variations below: •	 The Dpm can be installed below the insulation or below the concrete. •	 The upstand depth should equal the sum of the insulation slab and screed thicknesses.

•	 	 epending	on	the	insulation	type	being	used/applied	a	separation	layer,	or	 D vapour control layer (type 500-1000 gauge polythene) may be required. •	 A damp proof membrane is required. The positioning of this can be below or above the insulation or as stated by the manufacturer. •	 perimeter Insulation (optional). To achieve optimum performance, an upstand of insulation can be installed around the perimeter of the floor - to the same height of the concrete slab and screed. The thickness of the insulated upstand should not exceed the sum of the thickness of the plaster and skirting. •	 	 he	screed	finish	should	be	a	minimum	thickness	of	65mm	for	a	normal	 T domestic floor loading. For a floor with a higher loading, increased screed thickness and reinforcement may be necessary. Suspended Timber Floor
Rigid Insulation
•	 Either fitted flush to the underside of the floor finish or with an air gap above the insulation. An air gap of 25mm between the insulation and the floor covering will slightly improve the thermal resistance of the floor. •	 rigid insulation can be fitted with either timber fixing battens, galvanised steel nails, sheradised round head nails or saddle clips.

B. Damp proof membrane - sits below the insulation. However, with some insulation boards, the position of a DPM can be either below or above the insulation - see the manufacturer’s instructions. C. Liquid membranes – positioned above the slab. D. Tape – where insulation boards are butted together below a screed/finish, taping the insulation boards will prevent the ingress of screed. 2. Is there a difference in required screed thickness between domestic and commercial floor applications? Yes: A domestic floor should have a minimum thickness of 65mm screed. A commercial floor/floor with higher loading may need to increase the screed thickness to 75mm. 3. What thickness of insulation is required to meet the current Building Regulations? This is determined by the size of the floor. The larger the floor area, the more self insulating the floor becomes therefore thinner insulation is required. The exact thickness of insulation required for a ground floor application can be achieved by calculating the U-value using its perimeter/area ratio. The U-value of a new build property is determined by SAP 2005 4. Which products, in addition to the insulation, may be used in a suspended timber floor? A. Polypropylene netting or similar – to support the insulation between the joists (for mineral wool applications). B. Galvanised steel or sheradised round headnails (for polystyrene, polyurethane applications). C. Saddle clips (for polyisocyanurate/ polyurethane applications). D. Softwood timber battens (for polyisocyanurate/polyurethane/ polystyrene applications).
