 RE:

High
Speed
Rail
Through
San
Jose

 A
meeting
was
held
on
January
9th
and
was
attended
by
Phil
Hood,

Craig
Sutherland,
 Rosalinda

Cortez,

Sabina
Hall,

Carolyn
Downey,

Buddy
Gill
and
Jodene
Perrin‐Gill.

 Prior
to
the
meeting,
input
was
provided
by
Jake
and
Catherine
Lavin
and
Chuck
Bean.

 The
following
are
our
statements
of
concern:

 We
support
the
High
Speed
Rail
through
San
Jose
and
are
excited
about
the
possibilities
 associated
with
it.

Those
include
increased
revenues
for
downtown,
more
recognition
 for
the
city,
enhancement
of
the
plans
for
the
Diridon
area,
and
simply
greater
 convenience
for
our
own
personal
travels.

Our
neighborhood
will
be
directly
and
hugely
 effected
as
it
lies
between
Diridon
Station
and
downtown
San
Jose.

 We
strongly
prefer
under
grounding
of
the
rail
as
it
crosses
our
area
and
strongly
 support
further
exploration
of
this
possibility.

It
seems
no
one
really
knows
what
the
 soil
looks
like
at
the
depth
the
tunneling
would
require
‐
we
need
to
find
out.

An
83‐ foot
structure
is
not
something
we
can
happily
envision
for
our
children
and
 grandchildren.

We
need
to
think
in
terms
of
the
city
they
will
inhabit,
not
just
now.
 We
wish
the
finished
product
to
be
beautiful,
as
well
as
functional.

 Also
of
concern
is
the
process
of
construction.

The
area
will
be
bombarded
by
so
much
 building
activity
around
Diridon
‐
why
add
one
more
source
of
noise
and
 pollution?

Much
better
that
the
work
be
far
below
and
out
of
sight,
if
at
all
possible
and
 feasible.

 A
subject
that
was
raised
at
our
meeting
was
work
for
Americans
during
the
HSR
and
 train
building.

We
would
like
assurance
that
the
planning,
engineering
and
actual
 building
of
the
trains
and
rails
will
be
done
by
American
workers
and
built
with
 American
made
products.

We
all
know
what
happened
to
the
Bay
Bridge
as
a
result
of
 Inferior
steel
made
outside
the
USA.

It
was
suggested
that
the
now
vacant
NUMMI
 plant
would
be
a
good
site
for
some
of
this
work.

 Is
there
a
possibility
of
sharing
tunnel
space
with
BART?

Could
tunneling
be
large
 enough
to
include
both
rail
systems?

Coordination
of
all
the
projects
is
an
important
 concern
for
us
since
the
result
will
be
around
for
a
very
long
time.

Let’s
make
 sure
to
build
something
we
can
be
proud
of
in
the
future.
