Making Exercise Fun
Exercise is good for you - there’s no denying it. So why don’t you exercise more? Maybe you started an exercise program all excited, but soon the excitement faded and other things got in the way. You may have found yourself like so many other people quitting you exercise program soon after it had begun. Well, you need to change your mindset about exercise if you want to stick with it. You also have to get it into your mind why you are exercising, and more importantly – why you need to exercise. Think about it for a moment – are you truly healthy? Your health is your most important asset. Please take some time to take care of your health. So many people stop exercising because they get bored with their routines and it makes it easy for other things to get in the way of exercising. Soon you find yourself sitting on the couch watching television – and when people ask you about your exercise program you started – you say, “I just don’t have time.” Don’t lie to yourself and don’t cheat yourself out the benefits of exercise. First you have to figure out just why it is that you are exercising. In fact, you need to set a goal. Oh, I know, a goal – that sounds hard. It’s not. You need to change your mindset to achieving that goal as a treat to yourself. After all, if your goal is to lose weight, just imagine how good you will feel when you achieve it. You certainly aren’t going to say to yourself that it wasn’t worth it – trust me. But maybe a simple goal like losing weight isn’t enough – make it more fun. Make it about how you are going to fit in that new pair of jeans or that slim black dress. In fact, buy it and put it out in a prominent place for you to see everyday. Make sure you put a piece of paper by it with something you find inspiring. For me it would say something like – “This is your goal, what have you done about it today?” with an arrow pointing to the item of clothing. Now setting that goal in and of itself will not make you stick to your exercise program, so you will have to take action which brings us to another point – some people say exercising is boring. What a bunch of rubbish. You can make exercise fun – something you look forward to. One of the best ways to fail at this is to go to the gym and hop on the treadmill. So what do you do? If you are a member of a gym, you know there are classes available – try them. Try all of them. You are bound to find something you like. What if you aren’t a gym member? Well, the first thing you can do is get out and walk – walking is pure gold as you can walk fast, walk up hills, walk up stairs – you get the point – you can challenge yourself and you can get out and enjoy the world around you.
How about a ballroom dance class, or tango class? You don’t have to just watch people dancing on television - you can do it yourself. Think about the fun you will have and the new skills you will be adding. Not to mention how you will be the envy of so many of your friends that you know how to do the waltz or the tango! If walking isn’t your thing, think about a sport that you wanted to try, or check out the fitness channel. You know they have all sorts of great programming and you can think of it as a gym class. They have all sorts of programs where you can follow along in your home. They have aerobics, yoga, weight training, and even belly dancing. They have programs that you can have fun with. You need to make sure to keep yourself motivated and keep looking at your goal. In fact, don’t be afraid to up the ante so to speak by adding more pressure to your goal. As you see progress, you will have more confidence in yourself and your progress towards achieving your goals. There is no reason why fitness can’t be fun – in fact it should be! Start out with some of the tips that I have laid out. Think of it as a fun experience – something new. Make it an adventure – it will literally change your life for the better.
