What is the Field Placement System ?
The QUT Field Placement System (FiPS) is an online tool that is used to register your placement preferences and view your site allocation for field experience units. Student access to FiPS is managed by your Placement Officer. You will be able to see the link to FiPS (as shown below) when your Placement Officer ‘opens’ FiPS to students. You will not be able to see the link when FiPS is ‘closed’. FiPS should be used in conjunction with emails from Placement Officers. These emails provide unit specific instructions including timelines for entering placement preferences. Students must be enrolled in the field experience unit in order to receive placement information emails and to access FiPS.

Registering your placement preferences
Using the links provided in FiPS the Placement Officers may ask you to indicate unit specific preferences. Depending on the unit in which you are enrolled, you may be asked to specify your Specialisations or you may be asked to give a preference for pairs, private sites, geographical areas or specific sites. The following table (next page) is an example of what you might see. Please follow all the links provided to you and complete the information requested. Remember, some field experience units may require your site preferences only and some may require geographic preferences only. Some may require both and in some units you will not be asked to nominate any preference.

If you don’t see a link asking you to specify a preference for something then this information is not required of you. That means that if you can’t see a list of site preferences then you are not being offered a list of site preferences. The starting dates and closing dates on this screen indicate the period during which you may register your preferences and the links for registering your preferences will include a reference to the field experience unit you are enrolled in. Note that if no geographical preferences are asked for or entered by you then your address in QUT Virtual is used as a placement guide.

Registering your geographical preferences
Most Faculty of Education field experience units require you to register geographical preferences only. To register your geographical preferences, SELECT your preferred geographic areas and place them in order of preference. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to arrange them from 1 to 3, where 1 is your most preferred option and 3 is your least. Geographic areas consist of a set of postcodes. You may be placed at any site that is situated within the areas you nominate.
Select a geographical district from the Available districts box. Then click SELECT to move the site into the Selected offers box.

Registering site preferences (this option may not be available for the unit you are enrolled in)
The Site Preferences Registration page (if applicable) allows you to specify up to three sites where you would like to attend your field experience. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to arrange them from 1 to 3, where 1 is your most preferred option and 3 is your least. Note that placement at these sites is not guaranteed.
Use the text field and/or the pull down list to filter and refine your list of offers.
Select a site offer from the Available offers box. Then click SELECT to move the site into the Selected offers box.
View more details of the site selected.
When you have selected your site preferences hit SUBMIT.
Select a site from the Selected Offers box and click UP or DOWN to reorder your preferences.

Viewing your site allocation
Once your placement is confirmed you may view your allocation.
Click here to view your placement allocation.
When your placement is confirmed you will see your placement details.
Who to contact if you have a query about the placement.
These are your confirmed placement details. Date Block is the unit code with the semester start and finish dates. Your placement start date is as per the Field Experience calendar. Other QUT students undertaking the same field experience in the same site at the same time. Note that there may not be any other students listed.
Your University Liaison Academic’s name and contact details.
If the placement has not been confirmed you will see the message “site allocation is not yet available”. You Placement Officer will be working on your placement and will confirm it as soon as possible. Check FiPS regularly for your placement status.
