WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY?
• Photography is picture language. Unlike the spoken or written word, it is a form of
communication that can be internationally understood.
• The word photography comes from the Greek words "Photos" meaning Light, and
"Graphos" meaning Writing. Together photography means "writing with light".
• The word Camera comes from the Greek word "Kamera" meaning a "room or box".
A photographic camera being a light-tight box with a light sensitive film at one end and
a lens or pin-hole to admit the light image at the other end.
THE PURPOSE OF PHOTOGRAPHY
• The essential purpose of photography is communication. Pictures are the
photographer’s means of expression as a writer’s means are words.
FIELDS OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Each field of photography has a specific purpose.
• Information Purpose - to educate people
Examples -
• Slanted Information Purpose - the selling of a product, a service or an idea.
Examples -
• Discovery Purpose - to explore and gaining knowledge.
Examples -
• Recording Purpose - to record and preserves knowledge and facts.
Examples -
• Entertainment Purpose - to entertain people
