you have learned..”). To be a disciple means we must have a discipline Bob and Karen West
that keeps us faithful by being focused on that which is true…honorable…
pure…pleasing…commendable…excellence. To be a United Methodist
means we have a founder who created a method in which to live faithfully.
A statement of how to live faithfully, known as John Wesley’s Rule
(though scholars have not been able to verify that Wesley wrote this, it
sure seems ‘Wesleyan’) may set a new standard of faithful living for us:
“Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you
can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people
you can, As long as ever you can.”

What I appreciate about the Philippians text as a guide for this New Year
is that it combines both the importance of ‘thinking’ (“think about these
things’), for we are to be a thinking and thoughtful people of faith; yet also
we must put our thoughts to practice (“keep on doing these things”) and
make our faith a public expression of all that which “learned…received…
heard…and seen.” Pastor Mark will host a
