Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I move into the dormitory sooner than my accommodation voucher indicates? Yes, one week in advance without any special notification. If you intend to arrive even sooner, we may make an exception for you – provided there are rooms free in the dormitory and if you have a good reason for coming to Prague sooner (e.g. to cover the period between the end of your EILC course if enrolled in one and the start of the term). See your Arrival Sheet, the page on accommodation. 2. Erasmus students are usually housed in Hostivař Hall of Residence. Is it possible for me to move to another dormitory? Generally, it is possible to move to another Charles University dormitory if there are free places in the residence (see www.kam.cuni.cz - Online volná studentská kapacita or http://www.is.cuni.cz/koleje/kapacita/). However, you have to deal with non-English speaking staff there and so it‟s advisable for you if you want to arrange accommodation in one of these dormitories to ask your Czech student tutor or some Czech speaking friend to accompany you. The list of the Charles University dormitories is to be found at www.kam.cuni.cz (Ubytování studentů – Katalog ubytovacích zařízení or http://www.kam.cuni.cz/KAM-47.html). Please, don‟t attempt to arrange accommodation in dormitory other than Hostivař before September (the application deadline for our regular 2nd and above year students has to be over first). Also, note that if you succeed we would appreciate a short notification to the European Office and your host faculty Erasmus coordinator email address. 3. I was admitted to one Charles University faculty but I would like to enroll in courses at another one. Is this possible for me? Yes, generally it„s possible to take some courses from other faculties. The major part of your choice should however be from your host faculty offer. It is also possible that your host faculty has internal rules about the amount of courses you can enroll in outside of it. So please always consult your faculty Erasmus coordinator before you make the final choice of courses so that you don‟t have problems with the finalization of your study stay in Prague and issue of your Transcript of Records. 4. There is a Charles University Sport Centre located 10 minutes to walk from Hostivař Hall of Residence. Can I attend the courses there? Yes but not all of them. Charles University has 17 faculties (14 of them in Prague) and each of them is assigned only a portion of the time capacities of the Sport Centre. You should always choose from the offer for your faculty (see links below); only after the deadline for enrolment for the faculty‟s own students may it be possible for you to join courses of other faculties (if there are still free places). Please note that once you enroll in one of the Sport Centre courses for which Czech students can be awarded credits (at the major part of faculties, sport is part of first year curriculum), you are asked to attend the course regularly (so that the capacity is not blocked unnecessarily). Apart from the regular courses, you can use the offer of “free swimming” or “free sauna time.” It‟s also possible to individually book a tennis court or gyms (phone call in advance).

The teaching ends approximately one month before and the period after is so called examination period. You can arrange your exams for earlier dates if you need to leave sooner. 6. Will I receive a student tutor to help me find my dormitory and faculty buildings? Ask your faculty international club for one, if you want a tutor: http://intl-club.fsv.cuni.cz/ (programme alter ego) 7. Is there an university orchestra or choir and can I join it? Yes, you are cordially invited to join both. More information: http://certik.ruk.cuni.cz/orchestr_UK/Default.html 8. There is a regular film seminar running in Celetná 20, Prague 1 building. Is it open also for Erasmus students? Yes, all students enrolled at Charles university (meaning: having the student ID/ISIC card of Charles University) can join. Fee for joining is 100 CZK/semester. The films offered are of the newest international as well as Czech production (Czech films in Czech only, international production in original language with Czech subtitles).
