Brief summary of the Topic of PHYSICAL and SPIRITUAL HEALING
Prepared by – Damon Albert 02-08-08
The question at hand is this….
“When the bible is mentioning physical healing are we to assume that it is always a
reference to the Spiritual need of man, or is there also scriptural evidence that supports
the theory that the Lord desires “at times” to both heal the physical infirmities as well as
the spiritual infirmity?”
SCRIPTURE STUDY #1
Proverbs 4 vs 20- 22 My, son pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words, do
not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who
find them and health to a mans whole body.
Point#1 Please notice in these portions of scripture that the writer “most likely Solomon”
the wisest Man to ever live, makes notice that the Word of God is good for both the
Spiritual need of man as well as mans Physical health.
The word LIFE in the Hebrew Strongs # 2416 is actually HAY = which means , the state
of living, or contrast from death, also used as living water, fresh running, also the word
for congregation, How interesting… I do believe from this portion of the scripture we
can assume that the reference to LIFE is clearly an example and shadow of
SALVATION and Gods desire to heal the Spiritual sickness of man.
But also we must look at….
The word Health in Hebrew Strongs #4832 which is the word MARPE which means and
references healing, a remedy, or cure, combined with the word, BODY Strongs #1320
which is the word BASAR which is , the soft tissue mass of any animal, meat, skin,
genitals, fleshed, So by reading this scripture in its original context we can also assume
that the Word of God is good for the physical healing and remedies of problems
associated with or physical flesh or this man flesh shell.
So to summarize this scripture… We can see that the Word of God is both good for
meeting the spiritual needs of man, or salvation, and also the physical needs, being
sickness. If this is the case then we can assume that the Lord is concerned for both
SPIRITUAL AS WELL AS PHYSICAL HEALING.
SCRIPTURE STUDY #2
Psalms 103 vs 2-3 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who
forgives all thine iniquities: who healeth all thy diseases.
Please notice again that there are two sections to Davids statements. There is the
clear reference to Salvation in the reference to the forgiveness of sins, and also the
clear reference to the healing of physical disease.
The word Healeth in the Strongs #7495 is the word RAPA, which is to heal, repair,
recover, also physicians, and the word Diseases in the Strongs #8463 is tah lu im,
which is sicknesses . And then the word forgive in the Strongs #5545 is salah which
is to pardon, or release, or to spare,
Summary , so again have we one portion of scripture promoting two separate needs
that God provides, one is clearly that God is concerned about our Spiritual needs,
and then the other is that God is also concerned about of Physical needs.
Scripture Study #3
Scripture study # 3 is being provided to defend against the argument of Old testament
truths and New testament truths are slightly different when it comes to healing. I believe
as you look at Scripture study # 3 you will see the same spiritual truth reveal itself, and
that truth is that “The Lord is concerned about and has provided salvation from both
spiritual destruction as well as physical destruction.
James 5 vs 14 -16
Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church: and let them pray over
Him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith shall save the
sick; and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven
him. Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that you may be healed.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
In this portions of scripture you will again find references to the Lords desire to bring
about correction to both the spiritual state of mankind, and also the physical.
Lets look first at the word Sick Strongs #770 the word is astheneo which is to be weak,
impotent, sick, or diseased, and the word Save Strongs #4982 or sozo which is to save,
rescue, deliver, or to be in right relationship with God. Now this portion of scripture
although usually defined by today’s church as a physical healing passage, is clearly a
shadow of Gods desire for the Spiritual Salvation of man. But we can not stop there
without looking further into the text… we also see the Word Raise Strongs #1453 which
is egeiro which means to stand up from the dead, or to wake from sleeping, or raised to
life, here is yet another example of Gods desire to bring Spiritual healing to man and if all
we do is read these scriptures and base our opinions solely upon these scripture we miss
another spiritual principle…. Are you ready?? The scripture follows by talking about the
need to for fervent prayer life, and of course we all know we need to pray, but the
spiritual principle is found in the closing of this chapter, after the instruction to pray we
find this scripture in……
James 5 vs 17 Elias was a man subject to passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly
that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and 6 months, and he
prayed again and the Heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
So although we see in James 5 vs 13-15, that the scripture is speaking of spiritual healing,
there is also this argument.. A man prayed and that prayer had a physical impact on a
physical world. Yes the Lord is interested in our Spiritual needs, but he also has chosen
to place us in a physical world and has even at times given us power to pray and change
physical forces, even nature itself !!
Scripture Study #4
Also I believe it is a good point to mention Mathew 8 vs 17, the word Infirmities Strongs
#769 astheneia is also the word for weakness, disease, and illness, and the word
Sickness Strongs 3554 nosos which also means disease, and illness,
And the question that comes to mind is this, Why would the scripture use two word to
describe the same thing ? “That is like saying Jesus took our sickness, and Jesus also took
our sickness” This make no since, unless……… The Lord is making the Point that He
heals both Spiritual infirmities and Physical infirmities !!!
And to close…
The argument that states :Well God dos not heal every time can be explained as easy as
the statement “God dos not save all the time either” We know His word says he desires
all to be saved, but we know not all are saved, and maybe His plan is for all to be healed,
but we also know not everyone we pray for is healed, But I feel both the right to heal and
the right to save are His alone, and are decided upon Gods Devine will and purpose , it is
only our responsibility to be as obedient as we can, and know the Word of God. My
desire is to lead people to both the healer of their souls and body , the rest is up to Him !!
